I was out riding last night on my 2001 GS500 and decided to burn my friend in his car.  I dropped down into 2nd and toasted him, I brought it into 11k rpm and shifted into 3rd.  we get over to his house and asked him what it sounded like, much to my disappointment he said it sounded like a hyped up lawnmower.  He's got a 79 Honda CB550, which is a four cylinder mug in excellent condition and i can easily keep up with him, but what the H? a lawnmower?  That was pretty disheartening, any pipes out there with a little roar, and not so much of a whine or is my friend just a jerk cause i roasted him? haha, i am not interetested doing the swipe myself so does anyone know what an estimated pipe change would cost for labor and a new pipe?

How about a vacume cleaner with pennys in it? heh heh
I have a V&H and it was very simple. Only took about 8-10 min. and I am not the most mechanicaly inclined. I'm just not stupid. The directions are pretty easy.

And just what's wrong with the sound of a sewing machine??? (Asks the custom canvas/upholstery guy...)

Heh...

They sound alright to me.... I love  the sound they make when engine braking....

Anyway

If you want to hear a lawnmower, go listen to a Buell Blast!

Hate to say it dude, but a GS with a pipe just sounds like a LOUD lawnmower.

I have a 'Wings' exhaust and I think it sounds quite good. I have even received compliments from other bikers asking about the exhaust (check it out http://www.wings-silencers.com/)...

I swapped with my buddy once and as I was riding behind my bike I was very happy with the sound... :)

the previous owner of my bike pulled the baffles out of the stock pipe and it sounded like a friggin' uzi. The V&H sounds ok. It's never going to sound like a Duc or a high revving 4 though! Take it for what it is!

Move up to clamp-on pod filters  8)  sounds much much deeper and 5 times cheaper than changing your pipe... but you might be experience some kind of jetting problems and stuff like that.

Yesterday my bike backfired so loud that my ears were whistling... after we paracticed picking up a bike with my girlfriend - might that be a problem of jetting/pod`s or just flooded carbs, I don`t know?

Mine sounds so good with stock pipe but with uni-pods that cost me some $25 for two. Those ain`t street legal but who cares about that.

I don`t want to change louder pipe anymore.
But in the other hand I must change my pipe because the stock does not look good on some wannabe fighter project

The Brits are so cool man...They fit a silencer on their bikes...nice.
Anyway the GS sounds much better than the EX IMHO and in reality is much nicer with a pipe. Pods give you a bit more intake noise so its a extra hissing noise they make. No great difference.
Cool.

When I bought my GS, I thought it sounded like my electric shaver.  I installed a Yosh slip-on, K&N, and a jet kit, and I'm totally happy now.  Sounds mean at low RPM.  Still sounds wussy over 6k, unless you are totally full throttle, and at low speed.  Can't even hear it on the freeway.

Tru Dat!!

K&N clamp on filter with a Cobra F1R slip-on can.  Sounds pretty mean.  Definitely doesn't sound like a hyped up mower anymore.  To me the filter made the biggest difference, but the F1R does kind of finish off the bikes sound.
