I have terrible news. The graduate program I applied to ACCEPTED me. So now I have to...

1) Tune up and then sell my car
2) Put my K&N filler on, rejet, put the new bars and grips on the GS
3) Quit my well-paying job
4) Find a decent-paying job
5) Take the free '98 Volvo from my mom (reward for getting into grad school)
6) Possibly move back home (I moved 1 mile from where I grew up, so I can walk my shaZam! home)

I am f%$king ecstatic right now. And the best part is that I have a free car and a GS to go with it. What else do I need?

I'm leaving my tenure as an assistant controller to be a teacher. Wish me well...

Cool.... my sister just got accepted to a doctoral program at Ball State( where she is completing her masters).  If you can handle your parents moving home isnt such a bad idea if it will save you money.  Good Luck!!!!!!  And yes she is a total over achiever and she is taller than me which totally sucks.....

My mom is cool as shaZam!. I was out on a date tonight and she called and told me I had 2 letters from Pacific, so I was already excited. Then she called back and said she held the letter up to the light and could read the letter...I told her to stop right there.

So I'm on a date and am nervous already and finally called it a night. I go to my mom's house (where I get my mail) and she's trying to sit me down, saying "you'll find a good program that wants you..." and all that. So I open the letter, and I'm in!

We had keggers there when I was 18 (under her radar), so I think I can survive.

Thanks. f%$k, I am so pumped!

Best wishes!  Can't say I blame you; I'm an internal auditor and the monotony really gets to me some times.  What are you going to teach?  I hope the school districts are better in OR, teachers don't make squat here in Texas.  My mother has a masters in education and makes less than I do, with no college degree.

Congrats!  Pacific!  That's cool.  I remember when I got accepted into grad school.  I got an acceptance letter from one school (UMKC) the day I left for spring break in Padre Island.  I was pumped all week.  Running around naked.  Then I get back and I had another acceptance letter from a much better school (Mizzou).  Needless to say, I went on another bender.

And then went to Mizzou!

Apparently someone was drinking last night (me). Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate it.

If I keep drinking on weeknights and showing up to work 3 hours late, #3 on my list of tasks will be easier than I anticipated. Wink.

I've already been told I look like I'm stoned and that I smell like beer, so I may as well pinch a little hooch for lunch. Good idea!

Now that you bring it up, I suppose I AM bored with monogamy. Give me bi- or poly-, but mono- isn't hardly enough -gamy for this guy.

Help me out here, if you would. So my mom and I have been discussing ways to pay for my year in the program. Although I should get some aid to pay for the tuition part, there are still bills in the form of monthly living expenses, and we aren't sure yet how much I'm gonna be able to work, on top of classes. So I'm minimizing bills.

One thing we talked about was me selling my car, which would save me 300 a month. Great, I hate that car anyways. So then she's either gonna give me her volvo or possibly pay for my brother, a BMW mechanic-in-training, and his coworkers to get my 1981 320i into safe driving condition. Then she would keep the volvo and help pay my living expenses with the money should would have paid towards a new car. I know, I'm really grateful to her for even offering to help like this.

My next biggest bill after the car and rent payments is the GS. I still owe $2K on it, so I pay about 150 a month. So, while I would hate to get rid of it, I have an idea that I need advice on.

My idea is to sell the GS for about 4500 or so, and pay off my loan. I would then have 2500 to buy another bike. So I want something like the GS (cheap and easy to work on, cheap to insure, great mpg, etc), and I could either buy an older GS (I'd miss the F, but I still like the E's), or something a little bigger but still close to the GS (suggestions?). Any thoughts here? I'm trying to keep my expenses down, so low cost to maintain (even if it means a fair amount of wrenching by me) is optimal. While I could get an older CBR or GSX-R to make the step up at the same time, I'd rather not if that involves more money on maintenance and such. So if I need to get another GS until I can afford a newer, nicer bike and then sell the GS for what I paid for it, I'm just as happy with that.

Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

Buy another GS.  You should be able to find an E in great shape for $2500.

That's kinda what I'm thinking. Davidpu was just selling his in my area for around $2000, although that may be a goner by now. But what I'm hoping to hear is that this is a good idea to sell my newer GS for an older one, thus saving money but also being able to keep a beloved GS in the fam. Granted, I won't know shiat about it's prior care (I'm the original owner of mine), but it would have to be really f%&ked with to be in bad shape.

So you're thinking this is the way to go, Aaron. Anyone else concur? Sorry, I'm just really overwhelmed with the fact that school starts in 2 months and I have to go from living like an accountant to living like a student so fast. I need advice, and I trust it coming from (most) people here! Thank you all.

The E models are sexier anyways.

Think about it this way: school should be your number one priority. That is what is taking you places in life. You're also going to still have a bike, even if it is a little older. Plus, it's a GS, which makes it all the better.

I say go for it. You need to pay for school and expenses first, if that means selling the bike and getting a cheaper one, well, then that's what needs to be done. Thing about the GS is that it hasn't changed much so you wouldn't have to reaquaint yourself with it.

Go for it.

Well coming from 2 guys whose opinions I really respect (even if I shouldn't...wink), I guess I'm gonna be selling the GS. So before I do, I'm going to take it to the dealer and have them check the knocking while I'm still under warranty. After that, it's going in the paper. I'm thinking about putting it in at $4500. It is pretty stock, and the mods I have done are all for looks: total fender elimination, black windscreen, short front signals, rear signal integrator, and such). 4500 miles probably by the time it goes in the paper. Never down, always stored in covered area under bike cover. Few chips from rocks and all that in the front lower fairings, and the stickers on the tail had a little paint rubbed off from using bungees. Other than that, it's a gem. Those are all small items, in my eye. Rock chips happen.

I have a K&N lunchbox on the way, as well as new bars and grips at home, plus that R6 taillight.  I'll keep all this for my next GS. And I'm getting the valve kit soon, so those will be all done for the new buyer.

Sound good, guys? I just hope there's very little down time between the sale and purchase of the other bike.

Sounds good, Dave. Keep the fun parts for the new bike, as they'll work on either. Hell, if you get one of the old styles you could probably fab up a GSX-R 750 tail to make it all racey like!
