Yea they may say it fits but it wont fit as good as a 130 and it will handle like poop and look retarded because it will be pinched.  If it fits right and you do end up buying one, then go out after it is broke in and see if you can get to the edge of the tire, if you can then you are a somewhat skilled rider and the tire is on a properly sized rim, if you cant then it is highly likely that the tire is pinched and the profile is wrong.  Pablo whom was a very experienced rider and has more experience then me couldnt get to his edge with a 150 on a stock rim, I could on the other hand very easily because it was on the correct rim and the profile was meant how it was supposed to be.  If the profile isnt right then it wont wear right and you will run into the same problems he had.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof, is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools....

<<< it squares off in a wierd way making the bike fall too quickly when leaned over far............and............as the tire wore down, and because the 1/2" of tire at the edge never contacted the ground, the edge where the worn tread and the untouched tread met created an actual edge. once the bike leaned over far enough to reach that edge the "falliin in" was abrupt and scared the piss out of me on more than one occasion>>>

Pablo, there is no need to go to the effort of wearing the 150/60 tire down to get that fun edge, the AM52 comes from the factory that way.  :thumb:

sprint, as I said above, my 150/70 Lasertec looks great and handles as well as any tire I've tried, bias or radial.  In fact it handles so well I wouldn't hesitate to run it thru a poop covered corner at speed.

I put a slightly worn bias belted GT501 front on once with a well worn Z2 radial rear and it had that startling feeling that Pablo described of falling right out from under me on the first 2 or 3 fast tight turns.  I somehow corrected for this mismatch and it never did it again for the 3k more miles I ran them together.  True story.

Now it could be I was so worried about the clip type link on my chain that I just never noticed it when it did it again.

Like I said, if it works for me, it works period.

Just looking thru the catalog from my handy local tire supplier and they have a left over 150/60 AV50 for $69 and a left over Pilot Sport same size for $79.   Since my rear Lasertec will wear out first, I'm thinking of getting one of these supersport radials to run with what's left of the Lasertec front.  Just gotta try this 150/60 rear on a 3.5" rim for myself.  Experience is the best teacher for these kinds of things.   :thumb:

Just read this http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=25426.0 from Mr. T. Ferguson and it's got me looking at the $200 wheels for sale on ebay (sorry if the link was posted earlier in the thread). Other than making room for the tire, it's got to be the quickest way to get to a 160 tire. Nice write-up.

why do you want wider? what will you gain? if its for the look of a wide tire...forget it. even the 150/60 that is about the biggest that you can get on the stock rim will look tiny when you pull up alongside a sportbike. and the 150/60 isnt great to ride on when it wears because its pinched on the rim. it squares off in a wierd way making the bike fall too quickly when leaned over far.

the bike will ride better with the stock 130 or 140 series tire.

to get a 150 or 160 you'd have to swap the rear wheel for something else. search on here for 'rear wheel' or katana rear wheel' as the kat is almost a direct swap.

Was thinking of this... Thanks for answering it... We'll stay with the stocky's

You've just revived a 7 year old thread peterscotts, much has happened in the tire world since then.   :icon_lol:   Run whatever size suits you, I do.  I have run 110/70, 110/80, 120/70 fronts and 130/70, 130/80. 130/90. 140/70, 140/80, 150/60, 150/70 rears on the stock 3.0 and 3.5" wheels on my 97 and 02 GS500s for various reasons.  Put a 150/60 on last year just because it was the only size I hadn't run yet and I wanted to try it.   :thumb:

A 140/70 is really nice to corner on if the 140/70 is on a GS500.  :thumb:  Hardly any bike maker is putting less than a 140/70 rear on sporty type bikes now even on the 250s, wide rear tires sell bikes.

do the katana wheel swap if you want to go wider safely.  There are plenty of katana parts out there cheap.

Speaking of Katanas and tires, the early 89-97 Kats had the same size wheels as the GS and the 600 came with a 140/80 rear tire and the 750 came with a 150/70 rear on it's 3.5" wide GS size rear wheel.  The 98 and later Kats had the wider 4.5" wheels with a 150/70.

Most if not all tire makers approve the fitment of 150/70 bias tires on 3.5" wheels but only some approve of the fitment of their 150/70 radials on the same wheels.  None of the tire makers approve fitment of the 150/60 tires on 3.5" wheels in this country although many GS500 and Ninja 500 riders use this fitment.

Keep in mind that anyone can post info or alter info on the Wiki when you use the info found there, I tend to go along with the tire makers on these fitment issues.  The Wiki is helpful input but it is not the gospel, particularly on tire issues.

I felt completely safe on all the 150/70 rear tires I ran on my GSs on the stock wheel and remember the 110/80 bias Lasertec front tire with a 150/70 radial RoadAttack rear tire combo as the best all around handling tires I've had on my GSs.
