Hi, I'm new to the GS500 world as of yesterday. I went and bought a 2006 GS500F(Blue) at Carl's Cycles in Boise, Idaho. The service there was great. I am completely new to riding sport bikes and the only motorcycle experience I have are dirtbike. Well, I know most people will frown on this, but I managed to get it the 20 miles or so to my house with my wife in tow in our Mustang. She was more nervous than I was. The bike took some getting used to as it is much heavier, and harder to maneuver than a dirt bike. Traffic was light, thank God. I drove it to work this morning which is about 30 miles from my house, and have managed to put 120 miles on it since yesterday. I feel a bit more confident but for now I am taking it sloooow and not doing over 5000 RPM. I know you're supposed to not go over 4800 according to the guy at Carl's, but the speed limit here usually stays around 65, and that's about 5000 RPM in 6th. Well, I'm looking forward to talking to everyone, hearing stories, telling stories, and getting some tips. I'm brand new so take it easy on me, but I'm really willing to learn.

Next on my list of things to do, MSF Safety Course. :p

BTW, I love the GS....sweet beginner bike, and it looks great. :thumb:

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Comming from dirt bikes myself, if you haven't taken MSF yet, you may want to practice countersteering and ensure you've taught yourself to react in the right manner incase of emergency. Countersteering was one of the things i really had to practice... its there on dirt bikes, but the sensation is totally different on the street and took me a some time to practice (still practicing!) and learn how to lean the motorcycle.

Enjoy your GS!

Welcome! I am sure you will be happy with it.  :thumb:

As for beginner bike / sportbike, eh. It is a bike, and it is the rider that makes it a beginner bike, or a sport bike, or whatever. The more you learn about riding, the more I am sure you will love the GS. I love it more and more everyday  :thumb:
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.
