Took the MSF course over the weekend and passed...

Next up, 80mph wheelies down Central Expressway!!!

Seriously though. the class was a big help and alot of fun.  I went from never having ridden anything to being comfortable enough on a bike to start checking the classifieds.

Still have alot of work left to do on shifting smoother, better throttle control, and cornering speeds...well just about everything, but nothing a couple months in a parking lot and some early morning rides on the weekend with no traffic cant cure.

Now my biggest question is how does riding the GS compare to the beat up little 250 nighthawk that i preacticed on??

Congradulations! :thumb:

It's...heavier, taller, but balances the same, has more power, but it's mostly above 4000rpm and really kicks in around 8k.  The fork springs are probably about the same.  I believe the seating position is more aggressively leaned forward, but the seat should be more comfortable.

Keep the rpm's up, and definitley use that friction zone for smooth take-offs. :) :thumb:
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Howdy ag ... It's a great feeling passing the MSF, now the best thing you can do is to get out there and ride ... putting to use what you learned. Practice is the ONLY way you're going to get more comfortable with being on two wheels.

congrats on the class.  Most who have taken it agree that it is huge benefit to new riders.  Good luck with your bike search.

Tip:  In leans remember to keep your eyes level with the horizon, you will fight the bike less and it will do it's thing.  Thats one thing I don't remember learning at my classes.

So instead of working this afternoon ive been looking online and calling a few dealers trying to find an 04/05 bike used.  So far used GS500s seem to be elusive bikes, at least anywhere close to me.  Best ive found so far is a dealer who says that they have a new black 05 which i might go look at the weekend.  Hopefully i will be able to find the perfect one in the next couple of weeks.

Still have plenty of time to look while i check into insurance and swing by the DMV to get my liscense but im a very impatient person when it comes to getting new toys, and i want one NOW.

This leads me to another question...After i but it, what is the best way to get the bike home?  Theres no way im going to ride it home through interstate traffic and i dont think it will fit in the back of my truck(short bed Ranger).  Best option would seem to be getting a friend with a bigger truck to go with me but i thought id ask here and see if anyone had a creative solution i hadnt thought of yet.

How short is your bed?  I've found through fitting it in my truck that the GS is less than 6'6" (around 6'5" actually) from end to end.  I have a Frontier, but it's a standard cab.  My bed is about 6'4" with the bedliner, so it fits slightly sideways.

Edit: that is, it fits with the tailgate closed.  Mandres is right.  You don't need the tailgate up.
Sorry, I won't answer motorcycle questions anymore.  I'm not f%$king friendly enough for this board.  Ask me at:

Just leave the tailgate down and it should fit fine.  Ratchet straps will secure it tight enough to prevent any accidents.

Yep, a GS will fit in a Ranger.  I brought mine home in my dad's Ranger.  We just left the tailgate down and strapped it to the rings in the bed.  Hope you find a bike soon.
