Obviously you need a working lunch at Newcomb's.

Yeah, I forgot that I had a different username over there. This is the only board Brett wasn't taken on. I guess my secret is out now.

My boots came in today, so I'll finally have full leathers and boots now. No more jeans and Doc Martens.

i too am trying to get off work. i have to take off a couple days next week, so i've been making them up on the weekends. But i don't know when another chance for my newbie butt to take a ride like this will be...

i do have one hesitation though. Will there be any extended periods of highway speeds? The last few times my needle hung out above 70 for too long, the bike sputtered and died. (Both times on the 405 in heavy traffic. ) Stupid fuel starvation! It seems like 60-65, and i'm ok...but when the speeds start getting fun, the bike says "i'm done." Oh, and by the by, i tried running it on prime...still no love. :(

Hello,
I definately fall under the noob category, and would love to join you guys for a ride.  I only have around 60 miles under my belt.  Would this ride be too advanced for me?
Thanks!

Mk1inCali

I won't be able to make it, I had this prior weekend off due to sickness/a wedding reception, and so I'll need to be @ work every day.

Just wanted to let the new guys know that you definitely can run whatever pace you feel comfortable with.  Obviously the faster guys will have to wait, but they really don't mind as long as you are doing whatever you need to do safely behind them.  Ryusan, I think riding the ACH in general might be too much for a new guy to handle if you haven't been riding for a while and can spare the mental power to look away from the road for a bit.  I'd wait, personally until your instincts are a bit more fluid/immediate to head up there.

Hey Mk1inCali
Thanks for the advice!  I want to keep it safe for myself
and others around me.  I will keep on practicing and
hopefully I will be ready for the next one (or the one after
that).

Have fun guys.

brett

Yeah, I would second that. Even at the speed limit, ACH takes a lot of effort your first time up there. I did it with 2k miles under my belt, and the first time I had to focus 100% on my riding and not on enjoying the ride. When you are ready, I would definitely recommend going up on a weekday if you can. There aren't many people on the road, so you can take as easy as you need to without fear of causing problems. If you want a good place to start, I would recommend PCH. It's not "twisties" per se, but it's an easy and fun road with curves. The scenery is absolutely beautiful to boot.

12thmonkey, for ACH we won't be going at or above 70, or at least I know I certainly won't. 45-50 is plenty fast enough to have fun up there. Pablo said AFH is open and faster, but I don't know what speeds exactly as I haven't done it before.

I looked at the schedule vs. work load for this weekend....

yea, so I won't be on this ride...but I'll probably be cruising ACH on sunday

pantablo

cruising ach at 65 is work on the gs500, even with thousands of miles under your belt-it was for me. AFH is faster as in...well I dont want to say but easily exceeding 70 if you've the skill. longer sweepers with some turns marked 30mph (so they're 50mph roughly)... I've, uh, 'heard' of people running AFH flat out around 120+/-...such lawlessness is *cough* unthinkable to me *cough*... ;)

ryusan-60 miles of experience is a definite no-no up there. too much else going on and on a weekend even worse with bikes probably buzzing you getting past you...better save it for another day. PCH is a good suggestion actually. and once you've got a couple hundred miles on you should hit up malibu-much lower speeds overall and the canyons are only 7-10 miles each, giving you breaks between.

12thmonkey-you wont be at 70 consistently with the curving road so you should be alright although getting to ACH will put you on the freeway depending on where you're coming from. for me, from santa monica, its about 25 minutes of 80mph freeway riding.

ryusan

Hey, I really do appreciate you all lookin' out.
I have never been to "ACH" so I have no idea of the skill
level involved.  Thank god I didn't just show up blindly.
I'm in this for the long run so I'm in no hurry to carve the
canyons just yet.  I still have to master the parking lots.
Just kidding, I'm not that bad.

12thmonkey

i was looking on the map, and it looked like my biggest trouble will be getting there - i live in between Santa Monica and Mar Vista. i really wanna go, but i don't want to "break down" a couple times on the way there and back. That would be real killjoy. Hmmmm...i'm gonna have to think on that.

Pablo, i have 2k miles of commuter experience so far. i ride PCH to Malibu every day for work, but have never made it back into the canyons. Do you know, will there be anyone else there that hasn't ridden the twisties? If so, it's a good opportunity to learn with some other people...and i'll probably just leave early to compensate for the fuel starvation issue. If not, i don't want to be noob that slows everyone down. Ya know?

pantablo

not sure if if there will be anyone present without canyon experience, but overall its a good group in terms of waiting and watching out for noobs, and if you stick to riding within your comfort level you should be fine. I mean, we were all there at one time.
