Jeffery Montgomery, 33, died from severe head trauma suffered during a motorcycle accident at 4:50 p.m. on May 2 in the rear parking area of the Indian Oaks Apartments in Simi Valley where Montgomery lived.

Montgomery was riding a 2006 Suzuki Boulevard S50 motorcycle, which had just been delivered to his home.

While riding the motorcycle through the parking area, he lost control and ran into a wood and metal pillar of the parking structure.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by American Medical Response personnel. Montgomery was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

This is just sad.

What is wrong with taking the MSF course and buying a starter bike.

I have about 6 years experance with bike mostly in India but I still took the class and got a GS500F to start with.

My wifes friend wants to get a Hayabusa as a first bike.

He is coming over this weekend for class party.

It is sad.  People hear all their lives how fast and fun motorcycles are and when they finally get one they want to see what it can do.  Sometimes they scare themselves, sometimes they damage thier new 'toy', sometimes the damage themselfs and sometimes this happens.

That is so sad. i just don't get it. i know there are faster bikes out there...but i still get the involuntary smile when i punch it on the gs. What's so bad about starting on a "small" starter bike???

That sucks.

My buddy, who has been wanting a bike since I got one, informed me that he may be getting one in the next month. I told him that's shitty timing because I'm needing to sell mine, so he told me that in that case he will hold off until I get another one because he'd rather learn from me than from the MSF. Noooooo, I don't think so. I will teach you my bad habits and forget to teach you some of my good ones, whereas the MSF guys cover it all correctly.

Some people don't understand the importance of proper training. Like the guy in your story.

When I go to the bike shop on the weekend I see people look at the big bikes (1000cc +).  I can tell that they know little if anything about these bikes.  I later see them appliying for credit.   I seem to be the only guy looking at 600cc - 650cc bikes.

I see very few people looking at gear for there new bike.

A reminder of how badly we can be hurt even just tooling around a parking lot w/o a helmet on....

S50 isn't that big of a bike...  It's not a 'busa... It's not a GSXR...  This has NOTHING to do with the bike.

The guy didn't bother learning anything about riding and thought he'd jump in head first...  Too bad he forgot to check the depth of the water.

Damnit people wear a freaking helmet.   I dont know the exact stats but I do know you are much more likely to die from injuries received in an accident if you also received a head injury in that accident.  We dont have a mandatory here and it makes me sick to my stomach everytime I see a rider ride by w/o a helmet.  I know my helmet saved my life and I will never ever get back on a bike with out one.

RVertigo

QuoteSixty percent of the motorcyclists were not wearing safety helmets at the time of the accident. Of this group, 26% said they did not wear helmets because they were uncomfortable and inconvenient, and 53% simply had no expectation of accident involvement.

I wonder if being dead is comfortable...

oddly, this is a state that requires helmets, yet he still didnt bother since he was probably thinking, "I'm just in the parking lot." fool. and nothing suggests he didnt have any training. its just as likely he took the MSF, then bought a new bike...The MSF teaches you enough to start learning on your own, not enough to really ride on the streets.

and, on another note, a new guy from one of my local boards decided to buy his first bike-yep, hayabusa. no amount of sh!ttalking would straighten him out. 19 yrs old and knows the world. hope he survives.

thats a shame.  i recently went home to texas to visit family and seen a number of riders with either nothing on at all or just a helmet.

i dont get on my bike without boots, helmet, jacket, back protector, and gloves.  i refuse to become a statistic.  its a shame more people dont think that way.
