Hi Everyone, I've been riding my GS for awhile and lurking on this site, so I know what a great place it is for technical advice. I NEED SOME. My dumb self did not check the oil for reasons of stupidity on my part. So (and I am ready and waiting for some stern verbal spankings...I sure know I need some), one day I was riding and only a couple minutes after starting I redline the bastard. My GS starts makin a racket, and slowly stops turning over and come to a complete stop and the engine died on its own. It still turns over, but won't start. Other than doing an oil change, what else do I need to do? It sounds like there's a problem with the valves, but I could be wrong. I'm sure this problem has come up before and there's a solution for it that someone knows. Any help would be appreciated

Well il be the first to spank your arse

*whap*  :2guns: :icon_twisted:

I would try draining it and filling it up full with oil.... if small bits of metal come out with the oil then ur buggered hehe. Prolly best to wait for the super GS techs to get involved i just wanted to do the spanking

get yourself a compression tester and test your compression... you can buy one at Walmart for $20 or borrow one from a chain autoparts store

it's pretty easy to do and it should come with instructions how to do it... once you do that, let us know what you get for each cylinder

Before you change the oil..how about checking it? Make sure you follow How To: Properly Check The Oil In The GS500 . I read and re-read the post and noticed you didn't say that you checked the oil after the engine seizure (or at all, but specifically after..).

Did the oil light come on?

And yeah, do an oil change and look for metal flakes. See if the oil smells "burnt".

I'd say LimaXray hit the nail on the head.  A compression check is in order.  If there really is a problem (sure sounds possible) then one cylinder will be super low.  Anyone wanna make bets?  Is it possible to float a valve at redline?  I don't know the GS valve springs very well.  If so; bet on bent valves, screwed up valve guides, etc.

Good luck man!

You can hear the valves start to float when you rev it really high like that.

Wow, okay so then it could be possible that two valves interfered with each other...right?  I know that they are VERY close together.

Check your compression NooBZorz!

Well bro, you killed it.  If you starved it for oil, I would look for galling on the cams, both where they ride and on the tips where they push the valves,  galling on the pistons, check the bores, crank might be toast also.
