its not that hard to fing pictures of an R7  http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLJ%2CGGLJ%3A2006-10%2CGGLJ%3Aen&q=yamaha+r7

I tried that. Most of them were either race pictures or scale models of the thing or show pictures, never any nice close up pictures at someone's house (it looks like).

On those days when life is a little too much and nothing seems to be going right, I pause for a moment to ponder the wise last words of my grandfather:  "I wonder where the mother bear is?"

I don't understand...

Is there such a thing as an R7?

There was, but like many middle-weight sport bikes, it went the way of the dinosaur.  Now that middle-weights are making a comeback (Kawi 636, Daytona 675, GSXR750(never left)), I'm on the edge of my seat to see if Yamaha gets into the mix.

Yes. They were made back in the late 90s when AMA was pressing the 700 class (or 750, I don't remember) more than the others. The YZF-R7 was made in limited numbers in order to fulfil the homologation rules, similar to what Ducati does with the 999R and what Yamaha has now done with the YZF-R1 LE. Make just enough so that you qualify for racing and slap a nice big price tag on it to match.

Full Ohlins suspension front and rear, a killer engine, race bread chassis, and street legal equipment that was essentially tacked on. It is, in essence, a race bike with street gear stuck on. Not only is it devilishly gorgeous, but from what I've read, devilishly powerful too.

I've recently read that it was "devilishly powerful" for its time but is dwarfed by production bikes of today. its more a cult/collectors item IMO...

Cult or collectors item it may be, but it's still sexy as hell.

5 titanium valves, inverted 43mm Ohlins front forks, back torque limiting clutch, piggyback Ohlins rear shock, a taillight stuck onto the fender like an afterthought (necessary for road, but not track), analogue tach with LCD everything else, EFI controlled by a multifunction ECU, the now common Deltabox frame which uses the engine as the stressed member.

Power: 102.4 bhp @ 10,950RPM
Torque: 44.1 ln-ft @ 9,000RPM

On the dyno sheet I'm looking at the power is still building when it cuts off at 11,000. Looks like it could be pretty easily hopped up to increase that power by 25% at least.

oh they're sexy alright, but look at the numbers...my 600rr has more HP and is lighter. For a 750 (the R7 is a 750) its underpowered by today's standards. one doesnt buy it for the outright performance but for the combination of performance and history. If I went that route, I'd opt for an rc30 instead.

the R7 was slightly restricted pablo.....

In order to ensure that the bike complies with a host of emission laws, Yamaha has shut down one of the two injectors per cylinder. This is how the bike is capped at 105 horsepower. Turn on the other injector, add a high-level, free-flowing exhaust system, make a minor modification to the ECU wiring, fit a high pressure fuel pump and the R7 will produce a claimed 135 horsepower. In full race trim expect this figure to rise to around 150 horsepower.
