I've got a retarded question, I cannot figure out how to get the seat off an '89 gs500.  With my zx600r , there is just a key latch. Could someone point me in the right direction.

Should be a key latch (when sittingon the bike) under your left thigh. (behind the passenger ped)  if its not there then your going to have to look under there and find a steel cable and pull really hard to get it to unlatch the seat.

Else you're gonna have fun taking apart your fender to get at the bottom of the seat!

I've got an '89 also. It's right where JeffD said.

Yeah it took me two weeks to find out how to take mine off.  Thats when I found out where to hang my helmet.  I sure felt like an ass when I saw it.

you can hang your helmet there???

There's a helmet hook under the seat. Take the seat off, hang the D rings on the hook and put the seat back on.
