Why GStwin forum went down

Somebody exploited a weakness in our gallery and got into the host's server.  Needless to say they weren't very happy about it.  At least they just shut our account off instead of cancelling our account (which some hosts do).

We should have been back up yesterday BUT the host forgot to turn our account on (and even though I could have done it myself I know they'd kill my account if I messed with the htaccess file).  I called again this AM and begged them to open the account which they did!  Woohoo!

We have patched things up, we are back.  If it happens again we will have to lock down the gallery AND probably change hosts...which sucks.

So we're back.  That's all that matters.

No...  Didn't start here...  Just like Squid wasn't originally a biker term...

And...

Hackers like screwing with stuff to prove how cool they are, since they've never had sex and don't know what life is about...  Kinda like Forum Trolls.

It's not hacking into the gallery, it's exploiting a weakness to get into the server.  I'm no expert but the list of files/scripts they installed and executed got them root access to the server = BAD.

Hackers/script kiddies suck.  They just like anarchy on the web.

Boredom, and it wasn't even a true hack, it was just some loser who had the script already written for them probably. They give real hackers bad names =(

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

I was using it for "Annoying Newbie" when I played paintball about 7 years ago...  And it was in use long before that with the same basic meaning...  It's been used as a derogitory term for Navy Seamen...  And I'm pretty sure it was used in the movie "Full Metal Jacket."

Basically it means:  someone that is crappy or otherwise annoying...  And that same meaning applies to motorcycles...  Annoying Newbie == Squid

Check it:  Urban Dictionary

Or perhaps it came from the english Damp Squib.  "The idiom "damp squib" dates back to the mid-19th century."

All I know is it was around before the 600rr and GSXR...    :dunno_white:
