Old Mr. Wilson

I work what is called "alternates". 4 nines and an 8, then 4 nines and an off day (Friday)= 80 Hours, followed by the weekend which is always free unless"called out".  26 "3 day weekends" a year. Nice.
Anything else including a phone call is overtime (If you call me about work or I have to "go out", you have to pay me 2 hours minimum even if I answer a question or work 1.5 hours). During a normal day if we have to work 3 hours past our schedule, they pay us a meal as well...........then every 5 hours, we get a meal pay.
Taxes are Good. Millions that have been on Welfare for the last 30 years are depending on you. Also Millions that are coming over the border each year are depending on YOU.
Also taxes will fix our shitty schools and roads that have been broken for 40+ years.

You really don't get it do you???

Hey...........sometimes I make 3K (USD) a week. Other times I only make 1500 a week. Such is life.
We have to learn to do with what we have. It's not what you make. It's what you save.
You're gonna need every damn penny believe me. The difference in planning for retirement or not is the difference between eating tunafish or eating catfood. The sooner you start, the better off you'll (and your family) will be.  Learn the rule of 72. You'll thank Old Mr. Wilson in your later years long after I'm dead.

Private contractor?

Anyway he's right.  Sad to say the old fart speaks the truth.  Save for retirement whether you make $7/hr or $50.  The rule of 72 is too complicated for these kids.  All you have to say is that every dollar you save at 20yrs old will most likely be worth $6 at 60 if invested in money market and stock market.

I won't say how much I have in my retirement account, but I'll tell you that  despite the market crash in 2000 I have still doubled what I put in over the last 15 years.  The wife's has almost tripled in the last 15 years.  If it triples in the next 20 we'll be able to eat tunafish every night

Sounds like OMW is some kind of Union Worker or Gov't Worker? What do you do Wilson?

I am an IT guy for New York State.  I rarely use the "1 to 10 scale", and I rarely do paperwork.  I do keep a couple of spreadhseets and do some technical writing for training purposes, but that is about it. My duties range from basic user administration to PC and LAN maintenance, pc and network repairs and user support, web design, keeping the servers up to date, patched, secured, etc.  I also do training (we like to make sure all new employees have a "baseline understanding" of computers).  I play around with Netware, Windows, and Linux.  I support and maintain a couple of databases and facility management software as well.  I also work on the nurse call system (it is a health care facility) and pretty much anything else you could imagine related to IT.  We do it all - in house - just two of us. Myself and my boss. I don't know exactly how much I make hourly - since I am a government employee it is "salary", but I make a little over $36k a year. The benefits are excellent; health, vision, dental, you name it.

I also get crazy amounts of paid time off, work 9am-5pm, have every weekend off, holidays off, and pretty much do whatever I want - when I want - doing things how I like it.  It is not difficult to get time off, and if I get called in after hours for an emergency I get 4 hours overtime even if the job only takes 15 minutes. My boss is cool and gives me tremendous leeway, because he knows I really know my shaZam!  :icon_mrgreen: Not only that, but I like the people (my boss included), the location (less than 10 miles from home), and the work itself.

So no, not over 60k a year, and we're not hiring at my agency but I am sure NYS is in general. There are various IT positions, but I know for mine in particular I needed to be a current state employee to be eligible for it with x amount of years at a specific salary grade. It is also a union position. The union is great; it helps me do a lot of career development and educational opportunities.

How long do I plan on being there? Hopefully I will stay in the state system the rest of my career. I am 25 years old right now and in December I will have 5 years of state service.  I am working on getting credentials for a higher position. I really enjoy my job though. I can't remember a time when I really dreaded going in there. I've had a lot of jobs before this - I've worked my way up into this position - so I know what crap jobs are and what good jobs are.  This is a good one, a keeper until I am able to move up the ladder.  :thumb:

And speaking of retirement, our retirement system is great. They take out a % that I never see (pre-tax) and it goes into my retirement fund and I get a statement annually. I believe it is 3% or 4% and they match my deduction for the first 10 years of service.  After 10 years, they put the entire contribution in  :thumb:

dayam... I got to plagarize WildBlue verbatim... that was easy

edit: I once did my best to work out my hourly pay based on average time spent each week among labwork, reading, writing, teaching and classes. I arrived at just under $4.00 per hour... seriously  :cookoo:
