Alrighty guys, I hear ticking coming from somewhere below me when I let it go back down to idle, this is after my friend turned my "idle screw" (Read Balance screw.......)

To dark to check oil right now, but any other suggestions? Kinda a ticky rattly noise., like something's loose.

I love my bike I love my bike I love my bike I love my bike I love my bike I love my bike.

(Sorry, it's been just a huge avalanch of crap, and then my buddy snaps a clutch lever and almost ends up in tears. LOL.)

Need more info.

    * Is it a consistent, regularly-timed noise?  If so, does its frequency go up and down with engine RPMs?  [Suspect: Valve clearance]

    * You hear it
at idle, or on the way down, or just about anywhere in the vicinity of idle, or...?  [Just fishing!  :) ]

* If it's inconsistent or random, does it go away as you increase throttle even just a little?  [Suspect: Camshaft endplay]

* Can you think of any words to go along with "ticky rattly" that will give us a better idea of the sound?[/list]

PS - I've been away for some 7 months.  Can anyone remember if there have been any confirmed cases of "camshaft endplay" in '05 models?  Just wondering if the problem has been "designed away" yet....

Or it might just be normal valve ticking. Adjustment of the idle screw may have changed engine nose enough that this is more conspicuous.
@CC: Start to worry when the GS does NOT make noises. Quite a few are normal and part of the experience.

With Aluminum head and steel camshaft I don't see them "designing that problem away" (unless they go for some spring loaded compensation mechanism.)
OK, they could go for definition of axial position at one bearing only (shoulders on both sides of one bearing). Dunno if there's room for that, though.

marbles, when coming down the rpms when not in gear.

Goes away with any load...... God just make the freaking thing hold together for ONE full day of riding and I'll be happy.

Sorry have not had a day where the thing just worked. Anyways, something to worry about, or just throw a lit flare into the tank and call it good?  :cookoo:

Sorry about the negativity, I'm approaching having put in what I paid for it, and before I'm done having doubled what I paid for it. Not happy at all.

That sounds most like "camshaft endplay", which is simply one or both camshafts moving ever-so slightly along their length when not under load.  It's generally considered harmless (although understandably disconcerting).

If you check the parts fiche you will see that Suzuki makes washers of various thicknesses (1.0mm thru 1.3mm) for one end of each camshaft (to replace the stock 1.0mm washer).  I would put this one in the "worry about it later" bucket.

EDIT: Markus, I just checked the parts fiche, and it looks like Suzuki has already made a small design change.  In 2004 they apparently added extra washers on the other end of each camshaft - 2 plain washers and 1 "wave" washer.  I can only assume that the wave washer is intended to take up the slack.  :dunno_white:   Hmmmm....  I wonder if it just makes the problem more likely to happen by introducing flexibility into the system?

Sweet, can I still put a roadflare in my buddy's tank then?

I would say, unless you are going to just ignore it (which is certainly a fair option), try to isolate it. Maybe catch it on video/audio. See if it does it more warm vs cold. A good help might be to take the tank off (still make sure it gets gas somehow..)  so you can listen to the top of the engine better. Though, that is alot of work if it turns out to be nothing. Remember, it's easy for me to sit here and suggest work. If it were me, taking off the tank would be the last thing I would do. Myself, I would ignore it. I do that these days. Funny sound? what funny sound. It always sounds funny.

Yeah the guys pegged it, camshaft endplay. The consensus is that it is annoying, but not harmful. That's the price of an earlier model. :)
Rich, RIP.

Mandres

ehh.. if it were camshaft play why would it have just started after your buddy messed with the bike?  It would have been there since the engine was put together.  You might want to go ahead and remove the cam chain tensioner and check that it's working properly.  If it has indeed failed and your timing jumps you're looking at major repairs.

Mandres, true, CirclesCenter might want to look into that, should be easy. Still, why would the CT start haveing issues at that time too?

It finally got warm enough out for the engine to reach full operating temp. Been rather cold lately.
