Okay, so I'm at work right now, and this computer has been acting up for the past few months. A while back, I noticed that it had restarted on it's own. It did this about every or everyother day. I went into the system controls and unclicked auto restart in the system failure area. (system-->advanced-->startup and recovery settings-->unclick auto restart.) So now I was hoping that if it happened again it would give me some kind of message or something. Once I unclicked this it would never restart on it's own. So I clicked it and in the next couple days it restarted again. So I unchecked the box and just let it be. Problem solved! (so i thought). Then, yesterday it restarted on it's own (the auto restart box is still unchecked), then today it did it again. But it did give me a error message screen this time. Here is the main stuff it gave me.
Memory Management
Tech info:
   Stop: 0X0000001A (0X00041284, 0X01400001, 0X075E9122, 0XC0503000)

That's all I wrote down. Any ideas??  Both today and yesterday, it happened when I was using the computer. And it pissed me off because I was writing up invoices, and got to do it over again.

Do you get a message which pops up in the centre of the screen, it says system failure and it gives you a countdown till when the system is going to reboot?

If so you have a worm.

If the restarting is random and without warning, it could be the power supply.

Usually power supply doesn't give a warning but it may do. Another thing to check is overheating. Memory is related to RAM which relates to the processor. Sometimes when a tower unit is under a desk it is pushed right against a desk leg or up against the back of the desk. This can stop the fans working properly causing heat inside the case. You could pull the case away from any surfaces blocking the fans. Another check would be to take the side of the case off (a few screws on the back and the side should slide backwards and off) look at the proccessor heatsink (big fan on a square block on the motherboard) if its dusty blow it off or brush it off. This can happen if dust gets stuck in the filter of the heatsink causing it to overheat and shutdown. Make sure you do all this with the power turned off (no one wants shocking)

Windows XP? Check the system logs in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Find errors (red circle with white x that says error..) around the time that this happens. See what it says. It might give you some kind of a clue.

To me, an error like this screams "Driver". Do a CUSTOM (not express) Windows update and see if it wants you to download any new hardware drivers. If not, then go the manufacturer's website and make sure you have the latest hardware drivers, too. We have some Dell's at work that get windows stop errors because XP and the video card / video driver do not get along (they were upgraded from 98).

Like I said, my first guess would be that it is driver-related. If it isn't driver related, it could be a corrupt windows memory management file or sketchy RAM.

Try the driver update and see if that helps.

Could be lots of stuff...

Start with the easiest:  Update Everything (Windows, Virus Scanner, Drivers)
Then:  Virus scans and whatnot
Then:  Swap RAM and whatnot to see if it's bad.

Thanks for your input, I haven't had any time to do anything else about it. Been very busy today. The computer is actually sitting on a desk where it can get plenty of fresh air. I don't think it is the power supply because it doesn't shut off all the way it instead brings me to a screen (almost instantly) blue background and says what was in my original message. From there the only thing you can do it push the power button on the computer to shut it off. Also, the computer isn't even a year old I don't think. It's an emachine.

It's an emachine.

Some people talk crap about emachines, but that is what my home desktop is and I have never, ever had a problem with it. It is almost 3 years old now. I bought it for like $400 brand new. I dual boot the HD with Suse Linux / XP Home, upgraded the CD-ROM to a CDRW/DVD-R, and doubled the memory, but no repairs. It's solid. I'm an IT professional, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.  :thumb:

BTW, your error is known as a stop error. Windows is shutting itself off to protect it from..itself, more than anything. Remember the "Blue Screen Of Death" in Win 9x? This is basically the same thing. Just upgraded

Just buy another e-machine for fifty cents.

I knew somebody would hate on them, they aren't that bad of a computer actually, this is the only one we're had a little trouble with. We have another sitting right next to it and it works perfect, and my brother has one and no problems. If you upgrade your computer every 2 years these are great because we got them for only like 350 each. with monitor, printer.

Macs just cost too much.

Plus, none of the accountants want to use quickbooks on a mac.....

There's a very large gap between "Not That Bad" and "Good."

I'm guessing a driver error also.  Did you install any hardware prior to it acting up or update any drivers?  I have found the last few times I used Windows Update for my video drivers it ended up killing my video settings until I either rolled back the driver or installed a driver from the Manu.'s website.  On a couple of machines the sound drivers also exibited the same behavior.  If you want you can always Format/Reinstall.

porsche4786

No, I haven't installed anything new, this computer gets all it's info off of another computer, like with UPS worldship, and quickbooks. Doesn't really have anything at all on it.

Never mind what this used to say, these are errors from today, that I really don't care about...Here's the stuff from the other day when it took me to that memory management page thing.

I just found this. But it says it mostly applies to windows 2000, I'm running XP.
