How can I make sure the timing is correct?

When I wrecked my bike awhile back I thought the engine was seized so I was told to turn the crank by hand.  Well the problem was that I turned it the wrong way.  I have all of my new part put on and it turns but it just won't start now.  I was wondering if I could have screwed up the timing by turning the crank backward.  Any suggestions?

You did not indicate what new parts you put on - unless you removed and replaced the heads or just one of the following: cams, timing chain, cam tensioner, it is unlikely that you changed the timing.  If you did do one of those things, you may well have gotten the cam and ignition timing "out of sync"

just the clutch lever mount and the guages.

then the timing will be fine. the timing is not "user adjustable"  :icon_mrgreen:
if you wanted to change the timing you'd have to drill some holes bodge around a bit, a right hassle.

don't worry about the timing if you didn't tear into the engine.

describe your symptoms. let us have a shot at it.

I got it running!  The only problem is now it idles at 5000rpm.  I adjusted the idler screw allover the place and it changed nothing.  Any suggestions?

Check that the choke and throttle cables aren't binding and have enough slack.  Make sure the choke mechanism isn't stuck open.  Check for leaks in the intake boots.
