i have a nelson rigg magnetic tank bag fits gs good 5 inches deep and exspands to 9 inches kinda like my old ladys crouch works well for me

while a very inappropriate comment, does not make this whole thread TD worthy.

fwiw-I had a nelson rigg 8liter expandable magnetic bag on my 2001 and loved it. I really missed it when I got my 600rr (plastic tank cover on the bike's bodywork prevented using a mag bag).

Then edit it then change it to like 1 and 3 inches respectively.  Oh and it was in the O&E before.

Are you sure you're not talking about the 12L Tour Master bag that you sent to my Dad?  :icon_rolleyes:

oh, yeah that was it. I get my bags confused. I have a NR bag for my 600rr. 12Liter...sounds so big. actually it was quite spacious. I still recommend it, more than I recommend my memory...LOL.

Joe Rocket Velocity tank bag holds a good amount of stuff.... nice to rest your chest on sometimes too.  The tailbag is good too.

Not sure if they still make it, but there's lots of stock around.

Hey does anyone have this bag? Or heard of it? This seems like it would be fabulous for work/school.

Hmmm.  That looks interesting!  I wonder if the GS500 fuel tank is wide enough for it?

So far, I haven't been willing to sacrifice my tank bag for my laptop.  I use a bungee net and bring both. :dunno_white:

The only thing I'm concerned with is that there is no vibration/shock absorber built into the laptop tank bag...  No matter what mfr's say, I'm not gonna trust my laptop to be bouncing around on top of a hard surface like my tank.  There are only police and military laptops designed for rugged use that I'd consider, but those models are pricey

I'm bidding on that laptop tank bag on ebay. I have a very old laptop now and a new one on order, so I realized if there was ever a time to experiment with laptop-on-bike carrying, it's now. If I destroy my old laptop, no big loss. If it works, I will be much happier - the laptop goes everywhere with me and I hate having anything heavier than clothes in a backpack on the bike.

Wouldn't the magnetics in the tank bag be bad for the LCD screen and the hard drive?

Or is that an old wives tale?

Old wives don't know crap about hard drives!

Seriously, most hard drives are fairly well shielded.  I wouldn't go sticking a neodymium magnet on one, but for a tank bag you're probably okay.

Magnets are bad for CRT's, not LED's.

CRT monitors work by shooting different speeds of electrons (negatively charged) at a phosphorus (positive charged I believe) or sometimes different coating on the back of the screen..the result is lightwaves of different lengths causing the colors..magnets disrupt this

LCD- Liquid Crystal Displays arent LED's (light emitting diodes) most are active matrix screens, each pixel has three sections of color that light passes through when an electrical current is passed through the pixel, different color combinations are created by the mixing of the wavelengths. There's nothing for magnets to mess with there..

What's really cool is turning a CRT monitor upside down.  The Earth's magnetic field sets up magnetic flelds in your monitor and turning it over gives you funky colors because the field changes.

I have the Manta Joe Rocket bag.  I like it.  But maybe somebody can explain to me why glancing at a clock on a cell phone is more dangerous than glancing at a freakin' map?

magnets won't hurt electronics or hard drives because they are all shielded from this.  The thought is your computer/laptop/ipod/cell phone is bound to be close to a speaker or other electronic item that contains sizeable magnets.  Magnets are everywhere, you just don't realize it.  Sure, the magnetic field from a nuclear blast would probably mess up all your crap, but not the little magnets that hold on your tank bag.  You should be more worried about putting your wallet in your tank bag and screwing up your various magnetic cards.  Although I've put my wallet in my tank bag many times and unfortunately all my credit cards still work.

My key advice for a tank bag is to get one that is small enough you won't mind riding around with it for no reason yet big enough to hold 6 bottles of your favorite brew  :thumb:
