hello new to this place need a little advice on bike.  I have a 01 gs 500 and put on a cobra slip on K&N replacement air filter did away wtih stock air box and put in stage 3 jet all in same day .   i have a few Questions ?
1. what to do with all the lines from stock air box  the only ones i dont know what to do with is the one that comes of the top of the engine and went direcly to the stock box what is this for and what to do with it? also a line that  comes from inbetween the carbs a small tube connects them this line goes where cant remember when i took tank of is this the one that connects to the under side of the tank besides to gas feed lines.
2.  running 134 jet  when i started the bike it spit and stuterd trying to take of until i hit 4grand then ran great.  i ran the fuel air screw in more thought it was running rich got a little better now it stops at 2grand   still does it. the screws are backed out now one and a half turns each.  should i try and run in more to fix the spitting a stutering .  top end has great improvments  also is there a way to tell if iam running rich or lean.

if anyone can help would be greatly appreciated thanks

The hose from the top of the engine is the crank case breather connection. You should put a filter on it. My K&N kit came with a filter for it but just about anything that will fit the hose will do.

I was told that the small line from between the carbs is a vent tube and should just be routed below the bike, same with the open hose from the fuel tank vent tube.

As for the low-end performance issues you might want to make sure the carbs are synced well. After just about any carb changes you will want to do a sync.

You have the DJ kit in it right...
OK I believe 1 1/2 turns is not enough for the air screw. I typically start with 3 and some have gone in ~1/2 turn max. Some others go out 1/2 turn but 3 is a good start IMHO. The hose from the top of airbox I send to a little plastic bottle velcroed to the frame behind the filters.
Cool.

OK 2 grand problem is not only due to mix screw. Set that to 3 and see what it does...but you may need 40 pilots. If 3 turns fixes it leave the 40's for later when you open the carbs.

Yes i am running the DJ kit.  you think iam running to lean ?  if i run the screws out more that will give me more fuel rite.  when we started it for the first time we had the mixture screws out three and my friend who has worked on bikes before (mainly crusers) told me it was running really rich so we ran them in it got better.  If iam correct stock idel is  1,200rpm  well i think iam running that a little high to aroun 18-2,000 rpm  is this a sing of to rich or lean.  If i have to change the pilot jet would i go bigger you said 40 i dont know what stock is  and where would i get one of them ?   I put a little filter from autozone on the cranck case and re-ran the gas tank line down to the bottom of the bike thanks for that info black snowman!!  well iam going to playwith it probable tonight or early tommarow i think i will sync the carbs first then go from there.
thank  peoples back latter with more

High idle means you are a little lean usually, or you need to adjust the idle screw.  You can get a #40 pilot from most motorcycle dealership parts departments.

Several people have mentioned a #40 pilot - which would be great if you had a PRE-2001 bike.  But, you mentioned an '01.  Your bike has larger carbs that come stock with a 17.5 bleed type pilot and 127.5 main jets - not the 37.5 non-bleed pilot and smaller main jets of the earlier bikes.  You need a #20 bleed type -  Get your main jet and the pilot fuel screws right (somewhere around 3 turns out for the pilot screws just like everybody said, one or two washers under the needle and main jets may go up to 150 with a pipe and K&N pod type filters) before you mess with the pilot.

"MjM" said to get your main jet and pilot screws right are there two (one for each) i only drilled out one screw when i did the jetting, but i noticed there was another one that looked like it to (copper looking piece of metal)  was i supposed to drill them both out ?  it you are looking at the side of the bike i drilled the one out closest to the cylinders  is there anothe one behind it?  well i synced the carbs and ran out the screws two turns each  no luck yet same problems not much of a differenc either.  what affect does changing the needle hight have on the carb ? should i try that next?

I meant:

1. get the main jet sized properly - most likely 147.5 or 150 on a 2001 - and the needle adjusted right.

2. Get the pilot screws adjusted correctly (or as close as you can).

Then and only then do you need to worry about the pilot jet -  Only one externaly adjustable screw per carb that you need to worry about.

ok  thought  i missed somthing for a minute.  well iam running a 134 for the main jets that is the biggest on they gave me.  i got the carbs close as i could get them and i have the needle on the second notch if i move up more it will lean it out i might try that latter in the week i have no tools got to go to a friends ,and i work about 10 to 12 hours a day .  slow project

Yea DJ's come with 134...the needle is so drastically different that it needs only 134's and that 134 is very close to mikuni's 135. If you feel you need bigger jets...I'd just start tryiing 135's on up mikunis.
