On the 2006 GS500F there are two black metal tubes that attach to the cylinder. they are visible from the front of the bike in between the exhaust headers above the cross pipe. If you follow these black metal tubes they go up towards the gas tank and connect to rubber hoses and then go to some sort of metallic module.

On my 2004 GS500F I see there are casting holes in the cylinder but the tubes aren't there so I assume this is an upgrade.

I know one of you has the answer!

Does yours have an oil cooler radiator?

This is totally different than the oil cooler. Like I mentioned these black metal tubes connect to the cylinder directly.

I'll go to the dealer and get some pics on monday,

Good question; Im sure there are differences in the Fed Spec vs the Cali Spec.

Where's the metallic cylinder that the hoses eventually attach to. If it's underneath the battery, than it's just the stuff added to the Cali models...

I live in Canada and so California model is out of the question.

Not totally out of the qustion.  Did they change the emission standards in Canada for new MC's???  That would make it like the cali model.

could he be to help  stables the new fairing. the 06 modle faring is a bit taller . i'll take picks of my 05 next to my cusins 06. hes fairing (windsheild) and stuff sit a bit higher .. makes the bike seem higher but its not .

i have a 2006 gs500f,, i havent looked at that yet but my guess is an air injection system for emissions. if im correct its an easy remedy to get rid of, and the exhaust valves will thank you.BTW,, i just passed 500 miles on my bike and something noteably strange happened. while i was riding it and the odometer passed 500 the bike almost instantly changed its characteristics, very noteable for the better. best way i can describe it is,,it felt like an extra gear was added by motor spinning easier and using less rev's for speed traveled... much less revs believe me. my first thought was can break in period be controlled somehow ,,, fuel, timing, by an electrical source...  maybe im just a crackpot but i swear the beast changed dramaticly at exactly the 500 mile point.   

Yeah, at 500miles the 2nd cylinder activates.

It's the PAIR system that's supposed to somehow reduce emissions. It's been available since about 92, and obviously is mandatory in some locations. I have traces of it on my 92 (just the tubes, clamped shut.)
