So... after receiving several quotes all around $500-$600 for painting all of my pieces, I think I'm going to rattle can it myself.

Lacque or Enamel?

Will most likely go with the Duplicolor product line.

5-6 bucks for a scuff and shoot.....on a GS....E..... :o

find someone to shoot it.....
prep it your self
remove all stickers
sand it with 320 dry
and then 400 wet
then take it in for a spray

make it so all they have to do is mix paint and spray!!!!

the rattle can stuff will not hold up to the gas spilling!!!!!

...enamel...

Here's a tip:  All the metal stuff you want to paint, after you prep the surface, prime it and get it sprayed...right after while the paint is wet, put it in the oven and make at 120 for 10 minutes then 240 for 20 minutes.

btw...^holds up to petrol.

i just kryloned a racebike

i don't want to put a plastic piece in the oven...(fzr600)

duh....all the "metal" stuff...I even said that...lol

You do it specifically to the tank.  Bake it hard and good paint will glass well and hold up to just about anything.  Krylon isn't a good paint to work with...use duplicolor and higher quality enamels.

You "can" bake the plastic pieces, though.  You go to make sure they're supported evenly...with flat stuff I put cardboard under them.  Bake at 150*f for about 10 minutes...let it cool for 20, then repeat.

fzr has a plastic tank cover......
i tried the duplicrap.......
3 different cans...splattered like sh!t
took it back and bought crap paint just to make it go away....
came back 3 days later.....blown head gasket?????
time for the backup engine....and another race wiring harness.......different CDI

Try to get two-part clear coat in a rattle can for the tank. Some paint shops here in Europe offer to fill rattle cans for you. It ain't cheap, but for the tank definitely worth it. It will not keep for long, that's why you have to have it filled by the paintshop.

I've got the prepwork done, for the most part.

My quote of $600 was after I had completely stripped the paint off all the pieces, AND sanded. I'm going to see what Maaco will charge to shoot em also.

I've been digging around for what people have been using. I know the harley write-up used lacquer, and I'm not sure what the gs resources one used.

Out of my gut I'd have said Lacquer as well. It's the "hotter" paint, so I'd assume it would stand up to fuel better. Still, cross-linked (i.e. 2-part) clearcoat is advisable.

What color do you want done?  If you're still going to go with "having it done" send the stuff to me...I'll do it for half whatever those shops want to charge.
