I dismanteled the motor and cleaned out the bits and pieces.
I cut extra clearence in the pistons so the valves won't hit.
Drilled the missing oil hole in the Carrillo rods. Now I'm going to have the whole setup balanced again. The cylinder was dinged up, so I need to bore another one. Sent a rocker arm to Megacycle cams to be hardened. Bent one out of 4.
Then I need to cut down another gsxr head and do all the mods.
I'm going to get a fresh blade for my bandsaw right now and get to wittlin.
I figure in a couple weeks it should be up and running.
Had to scramble and put another 2 valve motor together for Thunderhill. That made for a long week. Come home from work around 9:30 pm and work on the motor until 1:00am. I was dragging ass by the time I got to the track. 100+ degrees didn't help any.
Went to a restaurant with some friends Sat. night. You'd never find this place if a local didn't show you. Had a 5 course dinner with a 22oz NEW YORK STEAK !!
That brought me back to life.
Finshed 5th in 450 superbike that was red flagged because of crashes.
Had a great 500 twins race.
AND WON!!! Boy I needed that if I'm gonna take the championship.
Still behind by 7 points, but the new motor will make things easier.
Can't wait to unvail the secret weapon. THERE GONNA FREAK  :nana:

Is the process for modifying the rotor posted anywhere? I could likely do it myself and save you the trouble and me the down time :) Even if I can't I might go the "modify the plate" route which I know is well documented.

The tab on the CA rotor is wider than the other. So it needs to be cut down. Other states don't need this step. Then I weld the slot on the bottom of the rotor. I cleanup the surface with a carbide end mill so it is flat. Then I make a new hole for the crank pin with a 3mm 2 flute end mill. The most critical part is locating the spot for the new pin hole.
I have a rotary table mounted on my milling machine. On the rotary table I mounted a 3 jaw lathe chuck. I put marking dye on the chuck and made marks using a V&H rotor. Then I just put the stock rotor in and line things up.
Even then I've had things shift a little. So I've had to reweld the hole and redo it. The slightest thing will knock it off 2 or 3 degrees. It could still be done with a drill press and vise if you wanted to give it a try.
I used a V&H rotor to set things up though, so I can't give you specific measurements.
If you have the 12-28 rotor (non CA.) slotting the pickup plate holes and rotating it will do the job. CA bikes can't get the full benefit from that mod though.

Hey Rashad, not a bad idea.
I was gonna get GSX500R stickers made. Maybe I'll call it GS-ZILLA.  :)

Bob:

you race against gixxers?

Piper5177

If you go with GSX500R, you'll need to get a set of full race fairings.

BTW:  Congrats on the win, only two more to go!

Bob Broussard

First off. I don't race against GSXRs. Just during practice. And I still outrun alot of them. But that's because they can't ride them.
I built a GS motor with a GSXR head. Just like the one from Cedrick Smith in the port Rider article. But mine isn't a 650.

I don't want to hide the work I've done. Then I'll look like all the rest. So no full faring.

Rashad

Hey bob im gonna ship the rotor tomorrow.. I just noticed that there is some rust on it. Is this ok? Its from a 99' motor too.. thanks!

I read about this bike...I have it bookmarked at work. Pretty impressive bike-lots of work went into it and it looks awesome too. I'll link a pic when I get back to work for the rest to drool over...they called it a CSXR650 but I never understood the "C" part...

CSXR stands for
Cedrick Smith Experimental Racer

I had dinner with James Lickwar and he saw the bike at Portland International Raceway.

Hi Bob Broussard,

I happen to live close by you (San Jose). Can I come down to where you are with my bike and will you want to modify the rotor on the fly ?

If you do, please let me have your phone #.

Thanks

Here is an Idea...

Bob Broussard for governor of California.

How's that...I dont think 65 sigs will take 65 seconds to get, the 3500 might take longer and if there are over 1000 names on the ballot like they hope it will...then you only need every GS twinner in CA to vote for you (easy I think....Pablo dont you get a vote for each post???) and its easy...
Cool.
