Ok, I understand that the GS (stock) has a hard time starting when cold.  Mine is a 2002 stock GS500.  My bike will start up immediately in the morning (in garage), takes about 2 or 3 min. to warm up and off I go.  I go to work, park in the sun (so. Cal) and after about 5 hours of sitting, I try and stsrt her and she doesn't want to. I first try it in PRIme with choke, push starter button in (3 sec) and it just chugs.  I try it a couple more times same thing.  I then turn to ON. and do the same thing.  After about 5 more tries it finely starts.  Could it be I'm not getting enough gas in PRIme or ON? Yes there's enough gas in the tank!  Why would it have no problems starting cold(relatively speaking in warm Ca.) and have a hard time when it's been sitting a little while?   

check you plugs, mabee your coils are a bit dodgy, it could be some thing like your choke is sticking on, dont put it on prime, and don't use the choke and see how that goes

Or, partial choke.

How do you "check" if the choke is not working?

This is a picture of where the clutch cable ends; it is currently in the off position:

Pull the cable and it should pull the assembly to the left (away).

Edit: This is for a '89-'00 model.  Your's is an '02, so I think your choke set up is different, but you get the idea.

To clarify:  The photo was taken from the right side of the bike.  Pulling the choke lever toward you will pull the assembly toward the left side of the bike, or away from you as you look at the photo.

Like scratch said: it's the same idea, just moved closer to the center of the bike.
