There are a few late 80's / early 90's GS's availalbe near me (Portland, OR area).

What problems might I have with one of these?

What should I look for (good and bad)?

I'd really appreciate any helpful hints B4 I sink my money into a used bike.

1. You may need to clean the carbs on, say, a bike thats been in storage.

2. When buying look at chain, gear, tire, and engine wear.

3. Find out if its ever been dropped.

4. Mileage

5.  AND MOST IMPORTANT.  WHY ARE THEY SELLING THE BIKE

Ask them when was the last time they changed the fork oil (it is the most often neglected maintenance, but you could use it as a bargaining point.  The answer is every two years)

If it is an early '80's GS450, beware that the valve cover gasket may be a paper-type gasket, which must be replaced for every valve adjustment; which is at least every 4000 miles.

If you are only looking at GS500's, you shouldn't have this problem, because they have only been made since '89 and they all have re-usable rubber vavle cover gaskets.

Buy an SV650, you'll be much happier.
