hi im new. not to hi-jack this thread but i want to make it to this event but my bike wont start. ive been trying to get it to run for the past week. the carb was cleaned 1-2000 miles ago, as was the oil changed. i just put in new spark plugs and new air filter today. the bike was running fine before i switched the gas valve off for 5 days. when i tried to start it up again it wont idle without me blipping the throttle.

is there anyone in the la area that has enough mechanical knowledge on this motor or motorcycles in general that can help me out? i felt like ive done everything and cant think of anything else thats wrong. i just bougth the bike a month ago and moved back to LA for the summer and dont know anyone that rides or know of any mechanics. i have this thread up that ive been updating with my work http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=27357.0

if someone can help me, please PM me or email me at marlopez@gmail.com thanks a lot

this is really pertinent information you posted in the meet&greet forum. if the bike was running fine before you did this work then something you did isnt right and I wouldnt look elsewhere (except the battery you drained trying to start it). my guess is the carbs arent set right and hopefully now with this info out there someone with more carb experience than me (as in ANY) might provide some suggestions.

you mention the bike wont stay running without you blipping the throttle. one thing to look for is whether or not the choke is adjusted correctly and you're letting the bike warm up fully, which can take up to 10 minutes.

so here is an update with everything that was done so far.
-new air filter
-new spark plugs
-carbs cleaned
-drained float bowls
-reprimed
-adjusted the air/fuel mixture screws to 2.5 turns out

thanks to queso on this board, lots of things were accomplished and we know what isn't wrong and what could be wrong. before we drained the float bowls, they were overly full. so that shows what started the problem. the person i bought the bike from said that to turn the petcock valve upward (to PRI) it would be off. so i listened to him and it was set on prime for 5 days which caused the float bowls to be flooded. so we drained those, thinking that would solve the problem. we also readjusted the air/fuel ratio.

we were able to get the bike to idle fine for a while on its own. i then rode it around the neighborhood and the idle would eventually drop forcing the engine to die (this is after many idle adjustments). the idle is very unstable. the next try i was also able to ride it for maybe 10 minutes to autozone and back, but i had to keep the revs up, never letting the idle go below 2000 RPM. upon coming home the bike shut off 1/2 mile form my house. so apparently the problem isnt fixed. i pulled out the new spark plugs and my left plug is fouled from being rich, and the right one is a little too lean. so we realized we need to sync the carbs. which we will hopefully do next week.

another problem is the choke. the bike idle fine with the choke off. but if i put the choke on, instead of the RPMs increasing, they decrease and the engine wants to shut off.

with all that said, any other suggestions? so next on the list is to sync the carbs and put in a gas additive carb cleaner that i bought.
what problems could have been caused by the engine being on PRI for 5 days and me trying to get it to run pretty much everyday from 6/8 to 6/18.

how long can i let the engine sit without having to start it to keep the gas in the floater bowls consistent?

the bike stilll won't idle.

today queso and i sync'd the carbs and adjusted the float height. the engine won't idle on its own. even after riding it for 15 minutes straight, it won't idle.
