Hey everyone, a friend gave me this bike to fix about 2 weeks ago because he didnt have time....if I could fix it, i could keep it for a few months. He even agreed to foot the bill of the parts. So i got everything fixed and was out riding today and when i pulled back into the driveway I put her in neutral for a minute to wait for a friend to arrive. A few minutes later I got on, depressed the clutch lever and shifted into first gear. The bike lurched forward a few inches and died. I tried starting it back up but the stater sounded like it was spinning, but not engaging to the engine. We decided we would try a bump start and i let the owner ride it, he bumped it, went about 20 feet and laid it down (he was fine). We pushed her back into the driveway and all of a sudden it was not able to start by using the starter button. We rode a bit, blah blah blah....brought it back, turned it off and once again, now the starter wont engage the engine again. ANY IDEAS??? sry so long

I would ask Kerry but my guess is either a short in the electical or a bad battery

The first is the battery? Check your cells and figure out how old it is, also check the terminals. If the batt doesnt have enuff juice to turn it over it will just go CLICK CLICK CLICK. could be your starter also, best to break out the battery tester and do some detective work. G'luck

its not clicking, the started is definitely doing some spinning in there, just doesnt seem to be spinning the motor :dunno_white:

I'm OK on the starter circuit ... but have no experience with the starter mechanicals yet.  (And this one sounds mechanical.)  You need someone like starwalt or Srinath or ....  :dunno_white:

What i am thinking is that you clutch might need a little cleaning if it has gotten gunked up.  Good luck

I don't mean to resurrect this thread from the depths of the forum, but I wanted to see if by any chance there was any resolution.  My starter (on a 4 month old GS500F with 3K miles on it) sounds like it is free-running and no longer "catching".  I would rather not take the starter apart (yet) if the dealer warranty covers it, but I was hoping to hear if there was any fix!

Do search on "Sprag Clutch".....but I wouldnt worry. If the bike is 4 months old it  is definately a warranty job.
