Locking up the GS...

I live in a condo development, and while it's in a good town and I'm not terribly worried, I would feel better if my bike was locked up.  I tried to search how/what to lock on it, but all I got was a lot of threads about locking up brakes.

Anyways, yeah if anyone had a guide to locking up my bike at night it would be appreciated.  I'm planning on getting a cover for it to at least keep people from touching it.  I was thinking of a motion sensor alarm that would alert me (i.e. wake me up if I was sleeping), but they're expensive.  Also, if there was a place I could lock it to my car from the side, that would be great as it will be parked next to my car (a civic) at night.

CirclesCenter

Not too many places to lock it too your car that I can think of. Check underneath your car for solid bits you could loop something through.

I have a 3/4" thick steel cable that I run through the rim, brake disc and then up through the frame. Nobody has ever touched my bike. Maybe sat on it, but if I caught them they'd never be able to sit again (I'd chop off their butt.)

I also live in apartment. The U-locks are pretty good too. Use a couple locks and basically make it look like it would be hell to get.
Rich, RIP.

yea but wheels can be undone, i would run a rubber coated steel cable through the frame or the stearing head, the hell with the wheels. you may forget that its lock and f%$k up the brakes. the frame isn't going any were.

Its really easy just to break the steering column lock.  I use a rotor lock and a cover.  Until I started cinching the cover tight with the provided hooks, some asshats kept pulling up the cover and fooling with it.  I would suggest getting a rotor lock, a cover, and a chain if you have something to chain it too.  Some jackass's might have more of an inclination to steal an F cause they look more like a gixxer.  I havent heard of a naked one being stolen but I am sure that someones has been stolen.

hook a stun gun to it wouldnt that be fun

If you are allowed you could get a ground anchor and concrete it into the ground. A ground anchor being a metal bar going into the ground with an exposed loop which you put your chain through.
When my bike is parked in town I have a brake disc lock with a built in alarm.

I always carry a massive Abus chain and cover with the bike, and when parking I pass the chain through the frame on the bottom left side where the side stand is located(i have a GS-E with spanish built fairings) or through the back frame.Always chain it to a solid object and cover it so it doesn't pull attention(bike theft is a pain in the A#% around here).

At the end of the day if someone is determined enough to steal your bike they will!!. Take a step back and think to yourself if I wanted to steal this bike how would I do it? There is aways a way so all you can do is make it difficult for them and slow the process up. Most bikes are taken by 4 strong blokes in a van, they just lift it into the back and are away in 1 minute regardless of chains through the wheels/frame. They get it in a lock up or omewhere private and then can remove chains/locks etc at leisure. If the bike is chained to something immobile it becomes difficult as they cant lift it and they will look for one thats not. You need a quality hammer-proof chain and padlock together with a ground-anchor and a alarm with a motion-detecter. Or get a a f***ing big ugly Rotwieller and tie it to the bars!

Altephor

I can't get a ground anchor because we live in a condo.. can't just go shoving things into the concrete.  That's why I wanted to chain it to my car.  Maybe to under the wheel well, to the car's suspension?

sledge

I cant see any reason why not, wrap it round the suspension strut, should be as good as any ground anchor, it will deter car thieves too. Just dont forget about it and drive off.

rangerbrown

loop a f%$king cable arund the frame, and light pole. and be done

Lol I would if there was a light pole.  It's just a parking lot.. closest thing is a tree about 5 yards from the edge of the lot.

A simple Master padlock is enough to discourage a theif of opportunity.  Get the biggest one you can, as the more visible it is, the less likely they'll just bust the ignition.

If someone wants your bike bad enough there going to get it. If they can get past the built in lock there going to get past any cable or chain lock. The best thing I like about my GS is that it so cheap to" INSURE". I just keep a cover on so the little kids stay off. If you want to sleep a little better, I guess you have to splurge for brake lock with the alarm!
Being naked was great, but now that I'm older I thought I should cover up!!!!

Mods?  What mods, no really its stock!!

Your car might have some loops in from or back that you could chain your bike to...  I think the loops are for tow/pull purposes...  I'm not sure.

I don't agree. The built in lock will not stop people lifting the bike into a van. A lock and chain will if it is attatched to a fixed object.

I'm not sure that they offer enough protection for you, but the Xena alarmed disk locks seem like a good idea. It deters the "carry away" strategy. I'm sure the disk itself can be removed, but that would set off the alarm too.

but then again, who would steal a gs500, the r6's are the one that are geting hit hard, and its even harder to get any one to insure them any more

RedShift

Learn from the UK and big city members - they see more motorcycle theft than anyone.  If you can't put it inside, agree that attaching it to something immobile like a car is the next best thing.  A thief is not wanting to spend much time during the job.  The tougher the grab the less interested they are.

And who would want to nick a GS500?  Anyone who thinks they can get away with it.
