Ok buddy pay the gs off first.  I did the whole trade my car in before it was payed off thing and it totally sucked ass..... especially if you end up owing more than the damn thing is worth.

Look at my list of mods. Thus far, I have spent less than $500 total including shipping for all of them. That includes the Katana shock too, as well as all my paint stripped and supplies I used for striping the lips of my wheels, the Kat wheel, and the paint I used to paint my headlight bucket.

You don't need a CBR. What you need to do is spend some time on the GS and learn how to ride. You are 16 years old and you are not responsible nor mature enough to handle a 600cc bike, especially with the little riding experience you have thus far.

Insurance is frightening. Have you even gotten a QUOTE for insurance on one of those bikes? For minimum liability for me (19, male) it is over $1000 a year. You're 16, it will be worse if you can even find someone to insure you. Want to insure your bike for collision and stuff? The premiums go through the roof for people younger than 25. It's absurd.

And just because you have a job doesn't mean you should be going out and spending ass loads of money on a new bike. CBRs will run you between $3000 and $6000 depending on year, at least. Factor in insurance to that and you're going to be running out of money fast. You're gonna need some money for college (if you decide to go) as well as gas money. The 600s eat up fuel a lot more than the GS.

So yeah, you'll get a lot of shaZam! for thinking about upgrading. Stick to the 500 man.

If you decide to trade up. (Trust me, see the thread, Outgrowing the GS) http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=28110.0

Naked sport bikes are the only sporting and affordable choice.

But you don't need to; I can put away a CBR600RR on the twisties, and my bike is stock except for the front end.

But for crying out loud you are 16? Man at sixteen I'm surprised I knew what end to put on the toilet! (Answer depends on how much beer you've had. Oh BTW drinking and doing anything besides sitting around is bad mmkay? Oh yeah and being underage and drinking is bad too....)

I know, at 16 no one could tell me what to do. (God I feel old, I'm only 20!) But at 16 I had the chance to buy a 350hp Mustang for 1500 bucks in great shape. (Ok cosmetically a hag, but a brand new engine, receipts and all)

I didn't get the Mustang. Why? I didn't want to die. I knew that if I had 350hp I would use it, every time I got the chance, corners, school parking lot, freeway on-ramps, twisty roads, any time the car was on.

Anyways I was looking at a CBR for myself and you know what turned me off from it?
I got the same feeling I had when I looked at that Mustang.
I asked myself, (seriously, not a hero or wuss question but a real question)
Is my skill such that I can handle that car? I answered, Probably not.
Is my maturity enough to handle this car? Again, probably not.
At 16 should I have had a GS? Probably not. Should I have even had the V-6 Camaro I bought? Probably not. I should have had a toyota camry or something.

At my age right now should I have the GS? Ya know I'd have to say... Maybe....

Hahahahha.

Really though I asked myself about my riding after Rich's accident and went, "Hey I need to slow down."

So yeah man, stick to the 5.
Rich, RIP.

I am 52 years old (in a few weeks) and my full coverage on the GS500 is 9 dollars a month.
I can only imagine being 16 and affording insurance on ANYTHING. The insurance company is going to have you (or your parents) bent over the proverbial stump and their scrotum is gonna be slapping hard against your buttocks. I have a daughter still in college and her insurance is killing us. I also have a 14 year old son that is starting to get the "car fever".  I am freaking out!
I need to go buy a 55 gallon drum of vaseline!
I would think full coverage on a new crotchrocket for you will run neck and neck with the price of the motorcycle (new) per year.
Many years ago when the V-MAX was the big muscle bike and approximately 6K new, I called the insurance company and lied and said I was 21 and unmarried with no accidents. I wanted to just see how much it would be. It was OVER 5K per year full coverage. A new Sportster (back then)
was 1000 per year full coverage as it was not in the  "superbike" category. These prices were for the state of Louisiana "in I want to say about 1987 or so" Hell it might have been a tiny bit later but the prices scared the hell out of me.
Taxes are Good. Millions that have been on Welfare for the last 30 years are depending on you. Also Millions that are coming over the border each year are depending on YOU.
Also taxes will fix our shitty schools and roads that have been broken for 40+ years.

You really don't get it do you???

9 dollars a month WTF!!!!

mines like $79

I dont have any accidents or anything like that oh and they bumped me up to like $200 dollars for no reason!!

I cancel that insurance policy fast.

Im looking for a decent policy now, so yeah I AM uninsured at the moment but  :flipoff:

Damn thats good, on a side note it's better to have full coverage on a bike if you can affored it.  One lowslide can put you in the hospital with a damaged bike and hospital bills will add up fast.  Not to mention your other bills if your unable to work.

I pay $550 a year for full coverage but I did up the medical insurace part a bit.

That's a truly amazing price for full coverage for a young 'un, Matty! It doesn't hurt to have more than the minimum, too, and definitely uninsured/underinsured if your state offers that. It never hurts to double-check your coverages and make sure your body is covered as well as making sure you carry more than the minimum (I believe we carry 300/100/50 or 300/100/100 on our bikes...I think the minimum is 15/30 or 30/60...way, way too low).

For those with a home, research having an umbrella policy on top of your car/bike/etc insurance.  Nope, I don't sell insurance; I just believe in being well covered. ;) :)

I am 24 and i pay 250ish a year for liability.  If i got a GSX-R600 then that would be about 1600 a year.  I would love to upgrade but i am stuck in the bike worth $$ and i owe $$$$.  Ideally if you trade it is you would want to pay the difference of what you can get for it and what they will give you for it then start fresh.  But if you are going to get the urge to upgrade again buy used.  That is what i wish i had done, but i couldn't find any 500cc bikes in my area and I didn't want to start on something bigger than that, mainly because of the experience question.

Short answer you will need to hold onto the GS for at least three-four years, till the break even point, then you could consider trading up for a bigger bike and not losing your but.  But man i wish i didn't know that, i would love to get a bigger bike but still have a blast on the GS.
