For some people it's all about bling. Bling is not what the GS is about, IMO. The GS is about motorcycling, pure and simple; it is a simple bike that allows us to learn. Honestly, if you're riding just to look cool, the GS isn't where it's at.

i think the operative word/letters here are IMO. Doing aesthetic mods to the GS500 doesn't mean you're just riding to look cool. There are only a few purists here who won't touch anything unless it increases performance or comfort, but we all know that number is very small. How many of us chopped our fenders? We all probably have dirtier tails and sacrificed a little rear-reflection to do it. But, it's still pretty ubiquitous nonetheless.

The truth is, he bought a GS. And i'd be willing to bet that it had more to do with it being a good and safe bike to learn on, than being a bike to bling out or be a squid on. C'mon, we all know what the aftermarket for the GS is like. He's 16. He bought a GS. He's already showing more discernment than most of us probably did at his age. It's one thing to pass judgment on a person's taste (why do you think the word "ghey" is so popular around here?), but passing judgment on a person because of their taste is another story. And there is hardly ever an excuse for wishing any sort of harm on someone for such differences. We've all done squidly things (except maybe Kerry  ), but that doesn't mean someone else deserves our kidneys, or we should have a "proverbial cap busted in our ass."

[/rant]

In my first post, I noted that my whole post was an opinion. I don't see why people don't get that. I even noted "Here is another guy's thoughts on the subject" and "here are some of mine"

Of course it's an opinion.

And he was thinking about buying a CBR600... at 16. Sure he got a GS, but I bet it was because someone else convinced him to do so and was looking out for his safety.

And I DIDN'T WISH HARM ON HIM. Jeeze, read the post, and my previous one. That was SOMEONE ELSE who had similar thoughts on the subject.

As to the "bust a proverbial cap" thing. It's true. I'm getting sick of seeing posts that are like "what exhaust fits our bike, exhaust exhaust exhaust?" There are more things to this bike than tooting around. And if you've followed my posts, whenever I do see a n00b exhaust post, it usually ends up with the picture: "Lois Lane... WILL BUST A CAP IN YO ASS!"

Why should shocks/springs be his first priority?  I am a noob, granted.. have not even taken my GS out of the parking lot.  However, it seems that if the shocks were approved for production that they are perfectly alright for moderate riding.  Not everyone WANTS to be diving into corners or dragging knees.  I'd say some people just want to cruise and yeah.. look good.  Wanting to look good isn't a crime.

You haven't gotten out of the parking lot yet. The GSes front springs are a budget item designed to be the absolute minimum to keep costs low. They are crap soft. I weigh 130lbs and I could bottom the forks. I'll repeat, the GSes front springs are complete and utter crap. You won't realize how much until you change them out.

I think everyone knows what your opinion is.  You've got a hard on for "squids".  We hear it in all of the "mod" posts.  It is no surprise that you respond with irrational anger.  But whenever I see a mod post, I can smell your angry response coming like a fart in a car.   But you get high marks for consistancy, despite having been warned by the mods.  At least this time you didn't call somebody a "f*cking idiot" or say that it is the "stupidest thing you've ever heard."  What gives?  Did you have a bad break-up with a modder?
Ha ha.  Just kidding, ha ha (if it works for AJ, it should work for me).

Actually, very rarely do I get on someone's case unless they are doing something that could potentially get themselves hurt or killed. In fact, I'm more than helpful in most mod threads unless, as I just stated, it is something that could possibly get someone hurt or killed. That's the last thing I'd want; you'd know that if you bothered reading my posts.

For $60 you can get Progressive springs. Sonics are $80 plus shipping. RaceTech ranks in at $110 plus shipping. It's worth the money.

On the contrary. They are nothing but for looks. I never said that I wasn't interested in having a nice looking bike, but I weigh modifications differently than others.

That's exactly my point. I only let loose on him because he was doing something dangerous and foolish. I used the wording I did because sometimes that is what it takes to get people to stop and think. If you're nice and polite that type of person will just entirely disregard you, but if you actually put something behind what you're saying then they might stop and listen.

if i wanted a bike just for "bling" i woulda bought something bigger that looks cooler. but i want to learn and look nice at the same time.

am i going to hell?

ajgs500

LOL no Matty we want to keep you from going to heaven too.  Atleast for about 70 yrs.

Unnamed

I'm gonna take the unpopular stand here and say that it was probably correct, based on the initial post, to make damn sure he wasn't trying to turn himself into a shiny looking statistic. The responses were a bit over the top, but the initial thought wasn't inappropriate. I had it too.

Matty, you need to understand that when someone mentions that they are 16 and that they want to do "look" mods, it sets off alarm bells in many heads. I'm sure you understand why, as at 16 most people are not particularly safety conscious and are fairly new at whatever they're doing (driving, riding, whatever). You may not fit our stereotype of 16 year olds, but saying that you want to make your bike look pretty without asking about performance/ safety mods/ equipment makes us think you fit the stereotype.

I think a more appropriate response would have been "Tell us about your safety equipment and convince us that you aren't going to go do stupid things with your newly modded GS, and we'll tell you everything we know or can search for about cosmetic mods." There are plenty of ways to ask someone to be safe without beating them over the head with it. If we know hes going to ride his new modded bike safely, who's to say he should have done a performance mod instead? Perhaps he'll get to that after he becomes a more seasoned rider.

Any chance of getting this thread back on track? Well, ill give it a shot.

Matty, This is what i did.

Ripped out the fender completely, relocated the plate, and blinkers, and flush mounted the brake light. I also stuck in a cheap piece of acrylic to keep dirt off the bottom of the seat, but it has since cracked so i took it off and havent found anything to replace it yet.

Alpha, i think that's hardly ever the case. i think most people would agree that reasoning is the best deterrent. And i've read enough of your posts to know that you have enough knowledge and reasoning skills to effectively "get people to stop and think." How do you usually respond to a searing insult laced with profanity? Do you "stop and listen?" Some of the wisest advice i've ever received was: People don't care what you know, until they know that you care. Sound sappy? Sure...but it demonstrates an a simple yet profound understanding for human nature. If you do care - which i'm not saying you don't - ease up on the insults. Your intensity and input without the insults would probably have more of the results you seem to be looking for. IMHO.
