I didn't start this topic to have my riding skill questioned by the entire site, Nor did i start it to start problems
(I find that people who talk condescendingly on the internet tend to suck at life. Dont worry i won't poiunt out specific names)..

I was interested in intelligent conversation about other bikes that may be more suitable. The avenue of altering the bikes gear ratio is the route i will shortly be taking. I know the 14t front can easily be found, but does anyone know of a larger rear-sprocket that can be purchased for the bike. (Or is changing the back sprocket going to be "Custom.")

Nice to see that the mods posess a certain ammount of communication skills! or lack there of.

the main reason for a front sprocket....less than half the price of a rear
front 20-25 bucks
rear 50-70
also if you go up more than 3 on the rear....ya need a longer chain

Ive always loved nekkid-ish bikes since 91 when I bought a bandit (400).
I like to see big fat frames, the bigger the better, thats why I picked up a GS.

Although its not a big frame, it looks good! There are design flaws as far as looks go that I dont dig, but see'n's how these bikes can be bought for really cheap...it makes it the perfect choice to customize. They dont need alot to look really sweet you know?

As far as power goes, sure they dont have 100 hp.....but when Im gliding through all those twisty turns in the mountains, Im not looking to leave a tire mark on the road....Im just looking to enjoy the ride...(most of time).

But for a new rider, the GS should have plenty of horse power and give you enough power to handle...
And since you have done a bit of riding, theres plenty of things you can do to upgrade your bike to suit your needs perhaps?

...plus these bikes handle really well when the suspension is updated....they can be thrown around/flicked really well.
Is that a turd on your upper lip?

No one still has answered my question. Let me restate it: Why would an experienced rider remain on a gs500?

because its not the bike thats slow...

I am just wondering why would someone come to a site thats dedicated to the GS and say that "The bike is slow, there's no nicer way of putting it! It's a VERY SLOW bike to be exact" and then go on to say "PS...if you decided to shell out anything near $4000 on a gs500f you seriously got robbed." and then say "I was interested in intelligent conversation about other bikes that may be more suitable."  I did not want to be the one to say it, but I think you started off on the wrong foot. I still think you need to clean your carbs or something . ( P.S. I spent $4956.32 total with mods on my 05' and every time I woop a cage that costs five to ten times as much I never feel like I got robbed )
Being naked was great, but now that I'm older I thought I should cover up!!!!

I know i probably should refrain from asking this question, but here it goes anyway. Let me start by saying i am not an inexperienced rider, i've ridden dirt bikes and others' bikes atleast five years prior to my first street bike. In April 2006 i found a really good deal on a excellent condition gs500.I didn't want a 250; however i wasn't planning on getting a 600 either; i wanted to play it safe.  It was a 2001 Suzuki gs500e with 2,347 miles on the bike. . Thinking this would be a nice step up from my friends' 2002 Ninja 250 i purchased the bike for $1200(nice deal eh?) . I've been riding the bike around and replaced the tires and it works just fine. My question is...The bike is slow, there's no nicer way of putting it! It's a VERY SLOW bike to be exact, making me wonder why seasoned riders would choose a gs500 over other bikes.(I won't even  get into suspension problems.) The only reason i can come up with is that it's an extremely cheap bike.

I find myself counting the months to next spring. At which point i will surely be upgrading to atleast a water-cooled 600.

discussion about bikes that may be more suitable for what exactly? I missed that part of your initial post. All I see is you complaining about how slow it is and asking why experienced riders would ride it at all. My post remains, and I wasnt questioning your riding skill. I was stating that there are no slow bikes for experienced riders. They can ride anything and have a good time.

Sounds more like you're looking for straight line acceleration, in which case you wont be happy with a 500. If your gs500 feels slower than the 250 you rode there is definitely something wrong with your bike. If you're looking to keep up with 600's on the straights, well it isnt going to happen with a 500 and you will feel its too slow. Get them into the canyons and the discrepancy in speed is mimimized by rider skill.
The gs has about 37hp at the wheel. Yes its slow. It wont win any drag races, except against other 500's or 250's. There is no skill in riding fast straight.

Why would an experienced rider ride this bike? Because they dont need top shelf suspension dialed in perfectly to enjoy the ride. They dont need the fastest bike to be fast. A fast rider can ride a slow bike fast.

also, pay special attention to the upper left corner to see who the mods and administrators are.

Srsly?  If you want more power, you're gonna need a bigger boat...    SV650, CBR600RR, GSXR600R, etc, etc, etc, etc...  Something with more than 50 HP (ie EX500) or 34 like my GS. :icon_mrgreen:  OK... Nice talking with ya'...   Now go clean your carbs, do your valves, change the spark plugs and take it up to at least 8K RPMs.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof, is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools....

Thanks to advances in automation, Nike shoes will be made by robots. Unfortunately, the robots will be made by children in Malaysia.

Bwahahaha.. no need to "poiunt" out specifics. I was being condescending. Maybe even a little pedantic. Know why? Because you came on our board with a chip on your shoulder. As for  having your riding style criticized by the whole board.. not even close. These are just the postwhore members.. wait till the REST of the board catches up.

I highly doubt you came looking for intelligent conversation.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

RedShift

If I didn't want a GS500 any more, I'd be looking at a Yamaha YZF-600R, a Kawasaki ZZR600 or a Honda CBR600F4i.  (I have looked, but don't have the motivation --  my GS500 and I still like each other too much.)

I'd recommend getting a 14T Front and trying it out before swapping the rear -- worth the shipping & handling fee in my mind.  Pantablo is right when he says you may not be happy with the power delivery of the GS500, whatever the gearing.  But you'll be hard pressed to get a late-model 600cc sportsbike for anywhere near what you paid.

But as to why experienced riders would want a GS500, I think the community has already answered that question.
