I sold the GS i briefly had and now i'm looking for something else maybe another gs maybe this Hawk.

The one i'm looking at is a 1991 with 19,000 miles. According to the owner it runs great and has no issues. It has a new paint job and some subtle cosmetic upgrades. The owner is asking 2,000.

What do you guys know about them? How long is the engine good for? 19,000 miles makes me nervous. Should it? What are some known issues for these bikes?

What do you guys think? Would you buy it?

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof, is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools....

What I know about honda hawk is that they handle really well but are a little under powered for what they should be they also came out in a 400 version called the bros and being a honda it will be quality even in the pictures you can tell its put together well you should not really have any problems with it except being rounded up by smaller bikes like say a GS500 but you will ride around the outside in bends just through handling :thumb:

That is a beautiful bike.  I love those.  You should get that.  I wouldn't be worried about the miles if has been well maintained.  My bike is only 3 years old and it has 13,000 miles on it.  Runs like a dream.  So for a bike that old, 19,000 doesn't seem like much (if it has been maintained).   :thumb:

cool, so the concensus is that the honda 650's are faiirly reliable? Anyone own one of these odd animals before? anything i should look out for when having a look at this bike?

Thanks

I lusted after one before...its the sv650 before there was a sv650. not as much power as the sv though but much more than the gs. that bike has a cult following. Bikes were often race bikes so look for little holes that would indicate a life of safety wiring (racing requirement). People used to rave about those even more than people rave about the SV, and they werent made for very long...serious cult following. I'm sure, due to the cult status, there has to be at least one good discussion forum on them. Here in CA they usually sell for $3000 and up.

Whats with the seat not fitting right on the tail end?

I know there is a forum for those.  If you google it you'll be sure to find one.  But yeah, those are pretty desireable bikes.  Love the SSSA, too.

I tried to find any info about gas consumption of these, but didn't find any.
Anybody has an idea?

well, i bought her. She was just as good as she looked online. I pick her up on Sunday.

She has 19,000 miles but from reading a bunch of Hawk forums, that is just a pup for that engine. The bike was owned and ridden by a mechanic so that made me feel better to. I'll post up some more pics soon.

i've always thought they were gorgeous bikes. i thought about a cb-1 when i was first looking for a bike, before i settled in on the gs. Like Pablo said, that seems like a really good deal. Out here, that'd be waaay more than $2k...and would still probably have a lot more miles too. Congrats!

Make sure you post on your impressions of the bike after you've ridden for awhile. i'd love to hear...especially from someone who just got off a gs.  :thumb:

Nice bike!  Let us know how it turns out.  Persimmon is a very pretty color.   :thumb:

19k might be a bit high on that bike...might not be anything at all though.  At that mileage it's entirely dependant upon previous owner care, and it's always a gamble.  I've seen many 30k+ HAwks.

Now, I only see a few problems with this bike...the most serious being that the lower tripple is black and that the bike has sliders.  Sliders may not be a cause for concern as they are becoming quite popular as preventative measures...unfortunately they are more often learned from experience.  The lower tripple being black reinforces this idea...just ask if the bike has been wrecked and run the VIN.  A wrecked bike is not a bad thing, but check his story against a CarFax report just to make sure what little history you can ascertain is consistant.  If it turns out he lies about a wreck then there's no telling what else he would fib over.  If he says it was wrecked and outlines the repairs made then you're probably in good hands.  This is more a concern for honesty than the integrity of the bike.  I've been screwed a couple times and I tend to cover my ass rather thoroughly anymore.

All in all, though, the bike looks great (minus the seat...minor issue unless strutural damage is present...see above).  $2k is a pretty decent price for that visual condition and mileage.  If it runs well I'd have a hard time turning it down.

And if you ever part it out I want the swingarm.

Cult bike with a good following....

Handle well....

A little under powered for what they are (In my opinion)....

Expensive for what they are....

Hard to find in good shape...

Nice brakes.....

Cool looking...

Nice resale value...

First off the front forks were an upgrade from another bike. I can't remember what right now but they were done by the owner before my seller along with all the other mods.

I'm sure the guy hasn't been wrecked (or at least as sure as i can be) I tracked down the previous owner (the guy that owned it before the guy i bought it from) and he gave me the full history of the bike: mods, repairs, upgrades, etc. He said that all the time he had owned it it was never wrecked, only dropped once (which he said was in his driveway) and since he no longer owns the bike he has no reason to lie.

I also backed up this story by reading all the previous owner's posts on the hawk forum about the bike. I did this mostly because i was worried about why it was repainted. All of the original post made at the time of the painting explained he was having it done because he had a friend that was learning to do custom paint, and then the sliders were installed to protect the paint.

The bike has one tiny scuff on the frame from where it was dropped before and it was so light i hadn't seen it untill the sell pointed it out. Basically if this bike has been wrecked the seller and the guy he bought it from are in cahoots (sp) and have been plotting this lie since 2004 when the bike was painted.

the seat was just unlatched in the picture, when it's latched it fits perfectly. I was worried about that too when I first saw the picture  :thumb:
