So, okay, I bought a 2001 GS500 about 3 weeks ago. Its been a champ, and awesome for a newbie like myself.

So, here's my issue (and please forgive the ploeb--I'm new to bikes).

I'm tootling along on my way to work. I stop at a light. Wait, wait. Green. I throttle up, but the engine isnt turning. Wierd. It shut down. Okay, start it back up, go.

I've got a straight road for about 5 miles. I'm doing about 40, and the motor starts to bog. Like there's not enough fuel going to the motor. Strange. I warmed it up and everything. I pull in the clutch so my speed won't be all up and down, and the engine dies. So I coast into the nearest driveway.

I think to myself, did I run  out of gas? Open the tank, and there's plenty. Try to start the bike, and its sluggish to turn over, but eventually it does.

This same thing happens twice more on my trip to work. I would have turned it around and gone home, but at that point, home was further than work, so I had to choose.

Anyway. Sluggish and reluctant to start, motor cuts off mid-ride? Still have plenty of gas, and have had no probs until now. ANy thoughts? I need somethings, since I might not be able to get it to the mechanic.

Adjust your petcock to PRI/RES (i don't remember) and see if that fixes it.  If it does, you're low on gas.  Refuel, turn the petcock back to ON and you're good to go.

You could turn it to REServe as well.  It looks like you have enough gas, but what you're looking at is the level where you need to turn it to REServe.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and Welcome!

But I've only gone like 110 miles on this tank. And when I open it, I see plenty.

I take it back. I've gone 149 miles. Is that about right?

How often do y'all fill up?

I fill up anywhere from 160-225 miles depending on how i ride. At around 160 miles of in city traffic my bike starts to hiccup and then I just switch it to reserve and everything is fine. Only 3.5 gallons of gas in my tank is used before I need to switch to reserve.

If I just fill up to the filler neck, inside the tank, 135 miles.  I fill up once a week; about 125 miles.

And how far will the res tank go? I'm like 2 miles from a gas station.

You'll have plenty.  I think it's something like 20 miles on teh reserve for pre 01 tank.  Anyone know for sure?

Well thanks guys, man I was freaking out. My wife would have killed me. I assured her it was mechanically sound when I bought it.
