A pothole claims another GS500f

I was riding to the bank this morning on the highway.  I was getting ready to change lanes to the right to take the exit, when I noticed another car on the left merging INTO my lane really fast.

I had to steer to the right shoulder and apply the brakes pretty quick.  All of a sudden, I hear a sharp noise (kinda like a clang???) up front.  I was able to ride to the next breakdown lane about 300 feet.  I stopped and put the side stand down, but when I tried to dismount the bike, I noticed that the bike wouldn't lean to the left enough to rest on the side-stand.

I look at the front and I thought the forks went on me.

I wsa able to ride (SLOWLY) home and checked the damage.  The front tire has a small dent, but I think that's fixable.  That's when I noticed the rear tire had a HUGE dent and a crack.

From what I can see, it was a pothole.  But the weird thing is that the rear section of the bike is kinda funny.  When I sit on the seat, the geometry of the seat to the handlebars & tank seem right, but when I'm off the bike, I notice that there is a HUGE gap between the seat and the fairings.  I can't tell if the seat got pushed up, or if the fairings got pulled down???  I'm not sure how the rear is built, so I can't figure it out until I take the rear fairings off.

Plus, I'm hoping that the rear suspension isn't busted.  When on the bike I can actually flatfoot completely AND stand with a couple inches to spare between the seat and my crotch area.  Normally, I can tiptoe both feet and there would be an inch in that area.  I'm hoping it's just the tire, but I'm not so sure.

I just ordered a rear rim and tire at the dealer...  $590!  YIKES!!!  But I need them right away.

Damn.. that sucks... but on the bright side, this is the first, and last time you or I will ever be able to flat foot any bike above 50cc! Unless you can find like an RSV250 or something.. which, if you did, I'd murder you and take it, cuz I want one SOOOOOOOO bad...

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

As soon as I "fix" it, I might be selling it.  I'm not sure if I need to replace any other parts besides the rim and tire.  Actually, the tire is just in case, cause it's rubbing against the chain gaurd, so I wanted to get another tire.

I might not be riding for a WHILE..

What sort of front springs do you have?

On a seperate note... This has always been a reason I've been against people increasing their spring pre-load to stiffen up their bikes rather than buying stiffer shocks. It means hard impacts from pot holes, gutter etc are more likely to do damage as the spring doesn't have as much travel to work with.

I have all stock suspension, but I set the preload on the rear to 7

As for the fairing and seat, try removing the fairing and putting it back on.

My little seat fairing thingy on my E has a small gap, noticeable, but not bad.
Rich, RIP.

This is REALLY pissing me off.  It's gonna be SOOOO nice outside for the next week or two, and I can't ride.

Prior to this happening, it's been raing cats and dogs.

Oh dude dude dude. Don't buy the wheel from the dealer. Get from eBay. Thats what I did and I replaced both my front and rear wheels from my little incident for a total of maybe $100 each (think the front was cheaper). The GS shares the same wheel with the Katana (I forgot which years, so someone please post) so there are a ton of them out there. Don't let the dealer rape you like that. :thumb:

don't forget.....
a 89-97 GSX600/gsx750 (kanatuna) front rim is the same, just diff colors
That means there's a whole lot of options out there besides the dealer.

To late...  I want to try and get it fixed in time for the MSF experienced course on 7-22-06 (This Saturday).

The sooner the better.  If I can't get it fixed on time, I have to reschedule for August 19th (Saturday).

That's why I already ordered from dealer.  They said I could get it in about 3 days.  Online and Ebay were like 7-10 days minimum.
