110mph, on a mountain bike..... Does this sound like a bad idea to anyone else?

At least a full face helmet kids?
Rich, RIP.

You'd think if you're trying to break a speed record on a mountain bike you'd be smart enough to wear a full face helmet...

Also...

HIS BIKE BROKE IN HALF! OMGWTF!!!

My eye's must be out of wack.  It looked like he had a helmet on till impact  then it flew off?  Or was that part of the bike?
Pilot 22.5, Mid 65 , Mains 147.5, Mixture screw 3.5 turns out

I don't think a bicycle helmet would be very useful at those speeds.

The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.

Well, let me explain this.

Helmet. Yes.

Elbow/Arm Guard. Yes.

What happened to him was, at 110mph, everything is multiplied like you wouldn't believe....  his 1 1/8 inch headset/headtube, buckled under immense fatigue (it was a slow fatigue, with catastrophic failure).  Thus, making him face plant.

Yes, Bicycle tires can go 110.  I've had a mountain bike up to about 60mph on the road, and 45-50 off road, both going downhill.

I've been passed by road cyclists going downhill at 75+mph.....

I hate my life. thank you.

side note.  Fastest speed that I can find on a bicycle is 166.9 MPH set in 1995

Bicycle helmet: Yes

Bicycle: Yes

Right gear for attempt: No

I'd want WAY more suspension travel, and I'd throw out my bike after each attempt.

Also I'd wear 1pc riding leathers and a full face helmet.

case of bike failure=WTFPWNED my best is 60.5 (mph) downhill on mountainbike slicks pressurized at 85 psi
