Katana 750 shocks  are one of the preferred "upgrades" for a rear shock tho they do raise the rear an inch or two...
You can make longer Dogbones to counter the raise a little (just have to make sure you have full suspension travel with no binding....)

I think 1/4 inch longer dogbones lowers you approximately 2 inches...Someone correct me if I'm off on that.

You might have to grind the shock pivot linkage to get the shock to fit or it may fit fine....

The SV650 shock will work with some minor alterations...(Think you need to shorten the clevis and redrill...). There's a few shocks that will "fit"...just have to get the one that makes the bike right for you...

Here's a ton of info on lots of different mods to do to a GS...

Bandit 600 shock is heavy duty and it even lowers your seat a little bit ( when you sit on bike it depends on your weight ). RGV shock does not change seat height.

get the rgv shock with the remote resivoir, its a good shock with easy adjustments on the resivoir, you'll find them easy enough in oz and won't change the bike height if your a shorty :icon_mrgreen:

servus,

i made a new shock linkage and new bones for the shock and for my new swingarm. next week i have the first ride with my gs.

the original gs shock is 29,5 cm wide.

i guess there is nothing wrong with those shocks, i can only speak for the shocks i have installed, and wouldn't comment if i didn't know how they fit,
im 6'4" and i have gone with a sv650 shock and thats raised it up a couple of inches and its a lot heavier duty than the rgv, or the standard shock. i would recomend that. but if you can get others to fit then sweet, let us know how ya get on :thumb:

from what I've seen deathlucky, fitting a gsx-r1k/6k, R1/6, Zx6R/1k shocks require heavy modification and raise the seat height a lot.
do a search.
the katana shocks are the easiest and heavy-duty enough for your riding. I installed a 93 Gsx-r 750 shock which required moderate modification and raised the seat hight quite a bit. I love it though.

before I bought my shock I was asking about fitting a newer model gsx-r shock in there. I have pod filters & the attached resevoir looked like it would fit. the problem is getting the shock to sit correctly in the bike. I think you need everything from a new shock lower linkage/pivot arm, new dogbones, and the other GSer who gave me this information showed me that he had to WELD a new upper shock linkage to the cross-beam in the frame.

or you could get a katana 600/750 shock that will bolt right in and will still be a huge improvement over the stock.

am I right so far Jim?

basically you can make anything fit with enough modification, but from your first post it seems like heavy modification isn't what you want. The older model GSX-R 750 shocks require significant grinding of the lower shock linkage and coming up with a creative way to mount the remote resevoir, but even doing that is still a FAR CRY from trying to fit a newer GSX-R 1k shock in there correctly.

do a search & you'll find more answers.

I weld a new upper mount to allow for a greater selection of shocks. I have posted pics before but I would have to upload them again. You do have to use a GSXR lower linkage for clearance at the swingarm. '04 GSXR600 and '00 GSXR750 shocks are installed on two of my bikes. The airbox has to be removed for clearance of the longer upper mount. I use K&N lunchbox air filters.

Here is a link to the Spring Rate and Shock Lengths post of mine.

NOTE: Running a stiffer rear shock needs to have a complimenting stiffer spring rate up front.
Common sense in not very common.

servus,

yes, you´re right. its easier to take a gsxr shock from 90-94. the older shock is perfekt for the gs 500.

it was for me a heavy modifikation to put the gsxr 1000 shock in my gs. but i need that shock! :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:
