I was thinking about mving to Hawaii and I came across this picture.

Looking at that distance really freaked me out. I don't know really how to explain it, but I've lived in one city my whole life, and I've never been somewhere so far away from everything I know.

Tell that to Pearl Harbor.

Warfare has changed since the 40's.  Now everybody has long range attack capabilities.  In the 40's Pearl Harbor was stragic because of it's location you needed a port to take on fuel and re-supply
Now with nuclear engines you don't have to come into port till your out of food.

The US fleet that happened to be stationed at Strategically important Pearl Harbor.  And you can bet if they'd had the chance, the Japanese would have loved to capture the Hawaiian islands.  Even with modern Nuclear powered vessels, it's nice to have a port closer to targets so you can deploy faster. It takes a long time to steam across an ocean.

Japan didn't give a crap about Hawaii, they were never planning to invade the US... the only reason they bombed Pearl Harbor was to cripple the Pacific Fleet.  We were the only thing (besides the A bomb) that could have slowed them down.
