Well, its official I got my GS500E yesterday. 97 6500 miles like new shape. $1600 with helmet. Couple questions though how tight is the chain supose to be? and is 130/90/17 an ok size tire?

Congrats!

The stock rear tire is 130/70/17, so you're running a little tall there.

Congrats! Great selection of bike!

Chain slack it supposed to be 1" to 1 3/8".

Congrats on the bike 8)
Does the helmet fit well?  It usually shapes itself to the previous owner's head... so I hope you have a slightly bigger melon   :)  You should definitely save up for a helmet that fits you right, feels comfortable, etc.  But... something to consider, I scraped my brand-new helmet on the pavement first time wearing it.  Just learning and had an unfortunate parting of ways with my bike.  No structural damage, but now the pretty paint job matches the marks I put on my bike
Point?  If it fits, use it, but when you are getting into some serious riding, get exactly what you want.  And hope with either helmet, you never need to test it out!

Congrats!

130/90 will work fine. no need to change it if it still has tread and isn't old and cracked. its a little taller than stock.

check chain tension with bike on sidestand or with someone holding up bike. check at slackest part of chain, about midpoint between the rear and front sprockets (generally). roll bike and check in several places as a chain can bind in spots.

good idea to get a clymer/haynes manual for this sort of information (and more). If you dont have one please support this site by linking to amazon through the link at top of page. Manual isnt very expensive and useful for maintenance and repair information...

Just like tricked I run a 140/80/17 and love the upgrade from the stock 130/70/17.  I went with Avon Azaros.  I got them delivered from less than $190.  Great deal look up:   SouthWest moto tires.  The guys is super cool give you very fast shipping with unbeatable prices
