Hyosung GT650 uses our frame?

So, I was able to look at an older Hyosung "Comet" GT650 naked bike yesterday, parked conveniently next to an SV650.  The engine is clearly the same lump.  I understand it's been detuned, but the hardware is strikingly similar.  But something new to me was the frame.  The Hyosung clearly uses the same frame as our GS500s.

Now, this may not be news, but on top of that frame was a very nicely shaped tank and some equally nice rear body work.  Would be interesting to see if the Hyosung parts are cheaper than Suzuki.  The tank and tail sections would look great with the parallel twin engine underneath.

Thoughts?  Observations?

That's the GT250. It's based off our frame, but I think it is smaller in size. Not sure. Do a search on here, there have been a few threads about the GT250.

i posted pictures of the 250, but the one i saw yesterday definitely said 650.

unless the owner swapped stickers...

either way: the tail section, foot pegs, side markers, and tank all look very good.

Hyosung is a Korean company owned by Suzuki so it no real surprise that Hyosung have been allowed to copy Suzuki designs and raid their parts bins. Certain parts may appear similar but I wouldnt bet a lot of money on them being identical. Frames are generaly designed around the engine and the tin-work is then designed to fit the frames. The frame looks similar to the GS5 item at first glance but looking closely I can see some subtle differences

I'd love to have that tail on my GS

they are definitely available here.  there are several dealers in MA.  the 250 seems to be sold by AlphaSports.

Actually the tail section, the wheels, and the front fork would be great looking on a GS.

Why hasn't somebody bought a wadded up GT250 to try this yet?

Ok kids, if it is a 650, and it is an SV motor that means we're close to the ultimate engine swap.

Who has both of these bikes? (GS5, SV) Please take some measurements, and see how close it is.

Hell I think I'm bringing my tape measure to the next local bike night.

What generations of SV650 are there, we need to know.

No the GT650 does not use our frame.

The GT250, however, does. Anyone know output figures, do they have a community?

OH BTW Those wheels are goregeous, and not white  :icon_mrgreen:

The rear wheel wears 150 series rubber, the front wears 110.

It's only a five speed.

Let me get my mits on one of these to ride and measure, my caliper is so ready!!!!

The GT250 uses something that LOOKS like our frame.

Around 22 wheel horsepower, I believe. Close to the Ninja 250.

do they have a community?

The only one I could find back when I was searching for parts for this thing was a cheesy Yahoo group with little activity. There were a few Hyosung forums, but they only had one small section for it and they also had little activity.

I am not pedantic enough to start making a full list but its obvious to me the frame used on the GT250 is not directly interchangable with the one used on the GS5. Particularly as it uses a totaly different engine design. You only have to compare photos. Here are a few things that stick out to me: Engine mounting locations differ, front R/H frame tube does not appear to be removable on GT, rear subfame apprears to be at a greater angle on the GT, front footrest mounting points differ, the rear shock mounting might be different as the there appears to be no plugged access hole in the frame for the bolt and the rear brake reservoir on the GT is positioned where the airbox is on the GS which means the fixing points must differ. Finally and this is the most obvious is the headstock. On the GS the upper and lower tubes are both welded to the headstock tube, on the GT, the lower frame tube is welded to the upper which THEN welds to the headstock tube. The headstock tube also appears to have been lenghthend on the GT. Yeah the frames look similar but thats where it ends and if you parked the 2 bikes next to each other the differences would be obvious. On a plus point the swingarm looks the same so it may be possible to fit the rear wheel assuming the brake disc is the same, but the front forks are upside-downers and may have different spacing from the GS and the brake disc has changed sides, so no direct wheel swaps there.

baco99

so you're saying there's a chance!

sledge

A chance? chance of what? the tin-work coming off the GT then picking up on the GS mounting hole centers and bolting straight on without any modifications? It seems Highly unlikely to me.

If i see one for cheap enough i'd try it.  I would love to stick the front end and rear wheel to try.  In my area though i have only ever seen one 650 and it was the GTR and after a year and a half someone bought it.  Havn't seen it on the road so that makes me think that it left the area.  So there aren't any around here to get junked.

afraid of a little fabrication???

But I am not the one wanting to swap the parts over am I? you are, so  I hope you understand if I say I really couldnt give 2 flying f**** if the they fit or not. You wanted an opinion you have got it, the frames differ and as a result the parts dont look like they will fit, thats my view take it or leave it my friend.

cuda_06

baco99- it seems that people would lower expectations of what is considered a direct swap if they were a little more familiar with what is considered to be so on the ceg as we are.  From what I have seen I do not believe it would be difficult to pull off, just difficult to get the parts.

Did I mention that I own a Hyosung?

CirclesCenter

One thing I've learned with working on various vehicles:

There is no such thing as a "direct" swap.

Almost everything has a few unforseen problems. (Even if you kind of knew about it)

In all probability it uses a frame that is 99% similar to ours.

Direct if you have an angle grinder, a drill, a tap and a welder handy maybe.  :icon_mrgreen:

I think we should honestly save the shaZam! fest that is starting for AFTER someone finds out for sure.
