okay, so apparently some ass knocked my bike over on its right side because there's a broken-off corner of an engine fin and my clutch cover gasket is leaking, my bar-end is bent, and my muffler is scratched...

QUESTION: will this broken off-fin affect performance?  it's a triangle about 3/4" x 3/4" x 1".

QUESTION2: i have the actual fin piece; how can i put it back on?  what sort of adhesive will secure it without being a hazard?  jb weld perhaps?  anyone else gone through this?

It wont' affect it other than looking uh... broken.

I doubt any kind of glue will last.  You might be able to have it high temp braized back on or even welded but that will cost you a bit and/or be a pain.

Best bet is to paint over the broken edge and call it character...

Yes, JB Weld can do the job.  It worked for me.  I made sure the fin remnant was pressed flat so it looked right, then slathered some JB-W along the broken edge, then refitted using masking tape on top to hold it 'til cured.  Put some build-up along the seam underneath the fin for reinforcement.

JB weld will give up soon enough and then the piece wont be around anymore...I am with JamesG...aluminum weld/braze it or leave it alone.

I vote for character. I broke my front tooth a while back, but the JB Weld only held the busted piece on there for a few months, so I just leave it alone now.

Don't bother with the broken tooth, Octane: I broke-off one front-tooth on-purpose: now I a have 15T front gear!   Loads more horsepower down-low!

Maybe tig, don't know much about tig.

Read up on brazing on their site. They can sell you a low temp aluminum brazing rod to put it back on. A propane torch ( or two) should be enough heat.

Bad for the the paint.

JB Weld has held my broken fin on for 7 years so far.  I'm impressed!  I did do a nice job WRT application of the product.  TIG welding might be a bit awkward, but it only needs to be tacked on in a couple spots.  Do not waste time with alum brazing; it won't work.

i think be wary of welding it on because it's so close to the cylinder. if someone doesn't know what they're doing they may apply too much heat and possibly warp the cylinder slightly? don't know if it would, but something to consider.

i'll probably give jb weld a shot; if that doesn't work i'll just chalk it up to character...going for the der honk look.  :mrgreen:
