Hey guys,
I'm planning a trip to houston and i'll be taking the I-10 for most of the way. I remember on my last trips to north cali i was getting blown all over the place on the road.

My question is..is the I-10 beset by very scary winds as well? This trip is from san diego all the way to houston..so i'll be taking the I-8 and then the I-10 the whole way pretty much.

Thanks :) and don't try to scare me too much
Peace

I drove from Houston to San Antonio along I-10, but it was durring a torrential downpour most of the way. We're talking 20mph max, and people were STILL going by at 50 without their lights on.

That being said, after it cleared up I didn't notice any excessive wind blast (although I was in a car, I can usually tell). You should be fine along that stretch.

When are you planning on taking this trip? We can meet up for lunch in San Antonio.

i've driven a few times back and forth from cali to florida along that route.  and i don't want to scare you but...there are some places that get some wind.  there are some stretches in new mexico and arizona where you'll see the dust storm signs, and when you first get in to texas there are a few windy spots (the dangerous crosswinds signs).  it's nothing too bad, though.  the only reason i remember is because i was driving my 97 jeep wrangler...and she gets blown around when it's windy.  kept me awake, though!

I used to drive from az to san diego and back about twice a month on I-8...in a truck though. I remember some pretty gusty winds on I-8 because of the mountains along with lots of twisties coming down on the eastern side. grasshopper is right about the dust storms and crosswinds. I also remember some foul smells along the flat part of I-8...fertilizer from the farms maybe.

I also drove a couple of times from New Mexico to Houston and I don't remember anything out of the ordinary. Maybe it's because it was on the second day of a 1000+ mile trip. Don't get hypnotized by the straight and seemingly neverending stretches of road.

ah man...i'll see how it goes...this trip is planned for the first weekened of september.

I remember the I-8 being really gusty as well when i was coming back from the grand canyon...

When i was coming back from north cali i was seriously getting blown all around the road. At a few points the wind was so strong i literally thought i was done for....i was pretty much at the end of the road.

Hopefully this won't be too bad  8)

You have plenty of open desert that can run some regular 30-40 mph winds in the right conditions.
But once you hit NM, you should be in flatter country so you don't have the mountains breaking and channeling the wind.
In TX, most of 10 is good solid road with a good bit of separation between the E-W tracks.

Tuck when you need it.
Fuel when you see it.
Stay hydrated.
Have a good time.
It's a cake walk.

I had an 8 hour day through West Texas up to 104F.
I took a couple of feet of 1/4" hose, ran it to the bottom of an 8lb ice bag and dropped it in my jacket.  A redneck camelbak.  Worked better than my bona fide camelbak.

Let us know when you are headed this way.

Becareful when comming into San Antonio. It seems there is constant construction and there are only 2 lanes at times, and really small lanes. Caution.

me and two other GS'ers went to big bend in march and we road I-10 from about austin all the way to big bend (few hundred miles from NM ) we had no problem ... we rain in to a little ran but that really did nothing .. we travlied about 90 most the way :) so once you get to 10 and you hit texas be ready .. most the ppl on that road do about 90=100 on avg.

If you don't have one, get a cruise control. You'll want it a few hundred miles in.

Ditto Bud.  San Antonio is actually a bit more frenetic around rush times, it splits more roads and can be more confusing than Houston.
To which part of Houston are you headed?

My cellphone coverage is pretty good actually..i have verizon so it should work there too.

I'm just doing this for the heck of it....long trip right before school starts. I"m probably going to stay with some friends on the way too if possible.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll just have to get the bike in good shape before i get going (fork seals, rear shock, and good run over for any other potential problems.
Peace
