First of all, yes, she is fine..

I was trying to teach her to ride, and she got a little flustered and "forgot" to put her feet down when coming to a stop, when she remembered, it was too late... came down fairly lightly on its right side.. nothing serious, little scuffs..

The biggest problem is that the brake lever got bent pretty bad, outwards.. obviously that took a majority of the weight when she went down.

Anyone got any good advice on how to bend it back?  It seems almost impossible to do without taking it off the bike and putting it a vice.. Is it difficult to take off?

Replace it, it is aluminum and is fatigued.  If you bend it back it will eventually break....no pun intended.

When you try bending it back it wil snap off. Get a new one for $15 at dealer.

That happened to my clutch side and I cut it off for a two (and a 1/2) finger length lever. Probably not a good idea with brake lever though.

It shouldn't be hard to take off, but aluminum doesn't like to be bent in one direction and be bent back.  It tends to break or at least lose most of it's strength.  I'd just buy a new one.  Shouldn't be more than about $15.

The last hing you want is to need a lot of braking to avoid a hazard and have the brake lever snap off in your hand. :o

HAHA-posting at same time saying same thing! Must be true. :thumb:

Heh heh heh.  3 replies in one minute stating exactly the same thing.  Must be something to this piece of advice.   :thumb:

Would a dealer have one for a '92 GS500?  Or be able to order one still?

Crimson

Hmm.. just called local Suzuki dealer.. they have them in stock, but want $29.45 for it!  Anyone have a spare they want to sell?

miket

I think I saw some on e-bay for relatively cheap. I believe you can use brake levers from katanas or gsxr as well.

i was enlisted to straighten the clutch lever on a gs500 (not mine) which had been pretty badly curled. what my buddy and i did was take a wet rag and wrap it around the grip and control pod on the clutch side, then heat the lever with a propane torch and bent it back in steps. worked out well and the lever is still going strong.

the one suzuki sells, i paid $33.42 for it, and it doesnt have that piece that attaches to it and goes between it and the master cyl. they wanted almost $68 for it new. found one at junk-yard.

They rip you off for a little piece of aluminum. :guns:

I am sure you can get aftermarket brands cheaper than the ones at a Suzuki dealer.

pantablo

I know www.flandersco.com sells them but they require a little 'adjustment' to make fit (even though they're supposed to be a direct bolt in). I heard this form someone who installed them so I dont have details. Wasnt hard-some dremel work I think.

im on my third brake lever, i broke the first one off the first night that i had it.  the second was my brother's fault.  it only cost like 15 and takes all of two seconds to put back on.. by the way mine is a 93

I dropped my bike a few months ago and the same thing happened. Looked impossible to bend back without breaking it. A friend came over one day when I was at work and he bent it back!!! It's not completely back all the way but you can't really tell and everything works fine. He said he probably could have bent back even more but then he would just be showing off. So maybe give it a try if you're planning on buying one anyway and maybe you can save a few bucks in the process.

Well, I just went to pick up the replacement that the dealer had.. as I wanted to ride!!  But it was BLACK.. not silver.. I took it anyway, and it was a quick replacement.. and black looks COOL.. only problem.. my clutch lever now sticks out as its silver..

Gonna call them to see if they have a black clutch lever to match.. but if not has anyone ever tried painting aluminum?  Its just a flat black so I figure some Krylon or something should match the other one pretty good.. but I am not sure if it will hold?  I will probably just try it on the silver one thats bent.

glenn9171

Just leave the brake lever black and call the mis-match "character".  Tell everyone there was nothing wrong with it in the first place.  Tell them you changed it solely to be different from everyone else.   :thumb:
