Idle speed too high after engine warms

Just bought a 2000 GS500E with only 2800 miles on it. Nice bike! I haven't owned/ridden in 20 years and nice to back in the saddle. I'm enjoying reacquainting myself with riding and getting to know this particular machine. I'm indulging in a long overdue midlife crisis.

My only complaint is that the idle characteristics change substantially after the engine warms. Actually runs a little better when I first start it... idles slow and even, narry a miss. But as she warms, I find when I come to a stop the idle will be very fast - ~3000 RPM. I twiddle the choke a bit and that brings it down suddenly. Idle speed is extremely sensitive to the slightest repositioning of choke. Trouble finding a sweet spot where idle speed is sensible. When I do, next time I stop at a signal it'll be too slow - engine often dies unless coaxed by revving slightly.

My initial suspicion is that something is amiss w/carburetion. Any of you have similar experiences/suggest how to most expediently and effectively remedy this?

Thanks,

Bill

Welcome!

Did you find to set your idle when warm, to 1200-1300rpm?
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?
