I am looking for a cheaper way to beef up my exaust sound.  it really is starting to get on my nerves, i am not looking for a harley/buell want to be sound, just maybe something a little more throaty and not so much something sounding like someone spitting into the wind, a loud sewing machine or a hyped up lawn mower.  that guy from up north (michigan, rthughes)  put a k&n replacement filter in the stock pipe.  i am not looking for anything flashy cause i am taking down to campus when i head back to school, so i dont want anything too nice incase some fool decides to mess with it.  i dont want to drill my pipe either.  so basically what i am asking is how much is one of these replacement filters, what exactly do they do, how do they sound and how much and how do i install one of these.  thanks all.

I drilled mine, if you're just going for sound it's definetly the best way to go IMO. There's that cobra slip on but i've never heard it myself but I hear it's nice. My view on it is that if it's just sound you're looking to increase you might as well not buy a 300 dollar pipe just to do that. (unless you own a Harley  ;) )

a racer friend of mine put on the hindle exhaust and it sounds wayyyyyy better than my v&h. so its your choice. both pipes are over $300 and they help throttle response a little.
going fast isnt the problem, its the crashing and burning that hurts

cobra slip on for $150 at starcycle.com (closeouts)...sounds really (REALLY) good. Bit throatier...I'm getting one soon.

If you don't want to drill your exhaust, you may want to consider thie little trick I decided to try. I took a Dremel to the little 1" exiting pipe at the rear of the muffler . I cut a little over an 1/8" off the tip. This in turn offsets it deeper into the canister. The larger surrounding pipe then acts like a megaphone. The result is a little deeper ,louder sound. I would've taken a little more off if I hadn't run out of cutting disks. But for the most part, I'm happy with the result....

You could take the stock exhaust and knock out the baffles by hammering a steel rod through it.  This is what you might call a 'mod of no return' !

You can look in a wreckers if they have a slip on from another sport bike, then take it to a muffler shop and fit on your headers... I typically use a dremel and make a very shallow cut right where the muffler welds on the header, then grind it nice and smooth, then you have a larger diameter welded bulge to which more pipes can fit easier. Then the canister you bought slips on and you either weld it or weld a small pipe that it slip fits on. 1000 ways to do it. Bound to be the cheapest way...Muffler/cannister off a sport bike $50-$80 (the $50 ones were pretty bad so account for ~75 for that) and $25-$50 for the muffler shop. You should be able to get it done for that much.
Cool.

When I ordered from starcycle they said the closeouts were all gone, but they can still order it for as cheap as anywhere else, which is what I did to keep down on shipping since I was getting other stuff from them anyway.
