Trouble-shooting a JeffD Taillight that isn't very bright...

A member here sold me a JeffD light a month or so ago, I never hooked it up as I decided to sell the bike as soon as my truck sells and I get some extra cash around.

I sold it to another member here, and he said the light is barely brighter than the stocker, and the brake function is not much brighter than thee running light.

Any of you electronics guys have any ideas for me to check out once I get it back and refund the money so I can get it working right?

I installed mine and I think its freakin bad ass.  I'd agree...the brake light feature isn't as blinding as I'd hoped.

I know it's LEDs, but could they be stressing the battery? Is your battery filled to the line & in good shape?

LimaXray

Try it on your bike with the bike running.  That will eliminate most power issues.  Check to make sure all the LEDs are lighting.  Other than that the only problem I can think of is poor resistor selection, which I highly doubt.

Personally, I bet the guy was just expecting too much out of LEDs

Lima-that's what I'm thinking too, I mean...come on...it's not going to melt your housing with it's power.

Budda, it's not my bike, I never tried it on mine, but I sure am when I get it back from him and will post picts and bump this.

Turd-thanks for the linkage.

FYI - I am said member.

Mk1inCali - I haven't gotten a chance to send them back yet.  Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to visit the post office.

l3uddha - I thought about the battery too, so I had the dealer test it out.  Nothing wrong according to them.  I didn't ask them to, but they even replaced my battery temporarily with a new one.  Nothing.

They "said"they tested the LED assembly on a new GS, but I'm kinda skeptical on that one.  I was in the showroom the whole time they had the bike.  (10-15 minutes???)  They did not come to the showroom to test on the GS500f in there.  Unless they had another one in back or something. :dunno_white:

Lima - Personally, I think you're an a$$ :flipoff:
Seriously, I realized before that the LED's would look different.  I've done mods with LED's before.  I know they're not as bright unless you wanna pay lots more $$$.  I plugged them into the wiring harness.  They looked good as running lights.  I liked the different shape they made.  But when I hit the brakes, at first I didn't even think anything was working.  I seriously thought that my wiring had been damaged somehow.  So I plugged the stockers back in, and VIOLA!  It LIVES!  So I did some basic diagnostics.  I made sure BOTH brake levers worked with the stocker.  After I knew my bike was in good condition, I re-plugged the LED module.  Same thing happened.  The running light works, and I realized that the brake function was "working"

To describe this the best way I can:
On a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being the brightest)

STOCKERS
Running - 5
Brakes - 10

LED MODULE
Running - 4 (I could live with this, 'cause I was expecting this, if not dimmer)
Brakes - 5 or 6 max

I had the engine running AND revving (3500 - 4000 rpm) too, so I know the charging system was doing it's job at the moment.

I just looked at the module again, and compared to the picture from Pablo's site...  I'm almost 100% sure they aren't "genuine" JeffD lights.

mine were definitely bright on brakes.
although I remember another member saying his were dim too and we chalked it up to an old battery since it was on an older gs model.

Didn't he do a couple separate runs of the taillights?  I seem to remember him producing some before I came to the board, and then he made some shortly after I joined, seems like.

Maybe that's my lack of sleep speaking.

Yes.  I'll put up a picture or two after this weekend.  I don't have any good recent pics of the bike.

There is no physical way I can hook anything wrong...  Someone attached one of those white connector ends that fits perfectly into the stock wiring harness.

That doesn't mean much. A wire could've been crossed when the connector was crimped on.   O0
