cat3 road racer...until hugo came along.

I know what you mean about the racing / kids conflict.  I used to do tournament karate until my boys were born.  Since then, it's been just coaching rather than competing.  Now that they're a bit older, I am looking forward to being more active in the study of martial arts.  My oldest son has just started studying aikido.  I may sign up for lessons so that we can practice together.

Aikido can be extremely time consuming and is essentially useless in self defense unfortunately. It's extremely difficult to learn and takes a lifetime to master (and even then you are still learning). I enjoyed the time I spent studying it though, and typically used it as more of a meditative/relaxation set similar to tai chi, as it is all about flow and balance. If your son is interested in a workable martial arts I'd suggest jiu jitsu. Plus, it sounds awesome when you say, "I know jiu jitsu."

I know.  I spent six months intensively training in Aikido (3 work outs, 5 times a day).  And I agree, as a form of self-defense, it is pretty much useless.  It does augment other forms of martial arts well (never hurts to learn how to take a fall REALLY well), and in my son's case, it helps him develop balance and gross motor skills.  The lack of "real world" applicability began to grate on me so much that I stopped studying.  If I were to go back, it would be something purely just to be able to better practice with my son.

My nidan (2nd degree black belt) is in Goju Ryu karate.  While I enjoyed studying and teaching it, I felt I learned the most about "fighting" during the two years I spent studying Jeet Kune Do gung-fu.  Plus it was entertaining to go to karate tournaments and shift from karate to gung-fu during the middle of a sparring round.  Kind of like being bilingual, it provided me with more opportunities.

Now all I do is swim and am looking for a way to get back into studying martial arts.  Aikido might be a nice transition after a few years away.

Sorry to all for the long digression.  It is really cool to see what talents are out there.  Plus, I used the "doggy-style" line with my wife tonight.  She thought it was hilarious!

Self-editing--"three work outs a day, five days a week."  The worst work outs were the 5:00 AM ones--I am SO not a morning person. :icon_razz:

Jake D

I'm pretty obsessed with playing poker.  I play on the computer.  I play in any house game I can get.  I've played tournaments.  And I recently discovered the no limit cash game at Harrah's.
Next, I'll discover 1-800-BET-SOFF.

Ok, back to the topic...
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?
