Hello,

I was looking to upgrade the sound of my pipe. I am on a tight budget so I was looking for the cheapest thing that would not actually ROB me of HP. I used to run Supertrapps on my car before and they were cheap and sounded amazing. I checked the Supertrapp website but they don't specifically offer anything for the GS500. Would a generic pipe work? But then I would be worried about actually losing HP's with an unmatched pipe.

Well you would need to rejet and all probably, but i thought the super trapps had the discs that you removed or added to "tune" so a generic pipe could be tuned if needed. 

I was wondering if the Supertrapps would actually fit. Do I just need to measure the dimensions of the exhausts to see if they fit?

gee that was helpfull,
the only problems with new cans is that just at the bit that wels to the stock can is a slight angle instead of it coming into it straight, that makes it impossiple just to slide on an aftermarket can, you have to get a link pipe as well, the next bit is the width of the exhaust its 45mm where most other exhausts are 50mm
the most popular non gs made exhaust system is the r6 can with link pipe, its angles arn't exactly right but they are pritty close and the link pipe goes from 45mm to 50mm

If you don't have at least $100 to deal with, I wouldn't touch the exhaust.  Want to make it sound better for a lot less?  Get a K&N Lunchbox or seperate pod filters.  And check around on what kind of jetting you'll need to match the new filters.

Another cheap (i.e., free) option is to drill holes in the stock baffle. I'm pretty sure that tutorial is found on the homepage.

OK, I'm probably the only dude on here with a supertrapp and actual experience with one on the GS500.  I hate mine.  Mine is mounted right behind the collector so it's pretty much an underbody, which is cool.  What isn't cool is the sound.  It's really crappy on this bike for some reason.  Might just be the particular one I have on but I'm getting rid of it.  It sounds like a dirtbike with a hole in the exhaust.  And it's ungodly loud, just ask my neighbors.  The one I got is this:

Came with the bike.  If you're looking for cheap, that's the one to get.  Me personally, I'm looking at either a different muffler or getting the stock ehaust (e-bay) and drilling some holes.  Previous post is a good idea for you as far as cheap and sounding good.

this is my r6 can and link pipe. i cut the link pipe and rewelded it to get it to fit with out a spacer

yea very helpful b/c mine no longer has the baffle in it ans is louder than a vance & hines pipe and gives a fair amount of hp

How did you remove the baffle of the stock can?

Well, that pipe sounds just like my bike with the wileyco flange/lunchbox, and coveted srinath stage 3 jetkit   

I was given the exhaust from my friends Yamaha yz426 after he crashed and bent the head pipe. It was just flat alluminum, but after I took a polishing wheel to it it looks really nice and it sounds just like those above videos. For an inexpensive exhaust, find someone with an aftermarket can and ask them what they did with their stock ones. Usually you can get them for almost nothing, and if you polish them it looks pretty nice.

Well I know that there are plenty of people here who would love for their stock can to go to a good home since they "upgraded" their exhaust.
