high-pitch squeal from rear wheel when axle is tightened?

I recently removed and reinstalled the rear wheel to install a Katana shock and now I have a problem.  When the axle nut is tightened to spec the wheel seems to tighten up and makes a high pitched squeal when it's turned.  When the nut is loose everything is fine.  I think the chain is adjusted properly; I have about one inch of freeplay on the sidestand.  I'm leaning toward replacing the bearings but I want to see if anyone has had this problem and what the fix was.

Thanks

Chuck

Did you say you have one inch of freeplay?   :o  In what?

Chuck

Oh, in the chain.  I thought you meant in the axle...

Could it be the brake???

How old is the bike and how many miles?
Where is it stored mostly?

Is it possible you forgot a spacer?  Did you get one put in backwards?

Figure the problem out before you go riding!

Yeah, my first thought was the brake too but I'm pretty sure that's not it.  It only occurs when the axle nut is tightened down.  I'm going to take the wheel back off tomorrow and make sure I didn't forget any washers.  It will be a good opportunity to check out the bearings also.

Well, it's fixed.  I'm not sure what the problem was but removing the wheel, regreasing everything, cleaning the rear sprocket real well and putting it all back together again did the trick.

If your wheel was misaligned, the rear brake can squeak...   :dunno_white:

But, it's all fixed...  So, who cares?

Grease the wheel and brakes and you should be fine.   :icon_mrgreen:
