I really want to learn how to work on my own bike and figure that winter would be a good time to do some stuff since I won't be able to ride.  My garage is not heated so working out there is just not an option.

I have an extra room I can put the bike in and windows for ventilation.  Any reasons this would be a bad idea?

I'm trying to find a way to get my GS indoors this winter for some maintainance and upgrades too.

Sadly, I don't think it's gonna happen.

sweet as, when i was in the army, my room mate had a whole bsa bantam in bits in our room  kind of a talking peice when the officers came through for room inspections
just make sure you have some thing down so you don't make a mess of the carpet

Actually, the carpet in this room is horrid.  It's a cherry red shag carpet circa 1970.  I call the room "the hideous room".  My cats aren't even allowed to walk on that carpet.  I just haven't gotten around to ripping it out.  Oh, and I'm not responsible for installing it, I bought the house 2 years ago.  It's a fixer-upper, It even came with an avacado stove........................   too much to do, too little time.

Aren't we all, somewhere deap down?  well...I hope so.

Anyway....  There are only three reasons not to have your bike indoors. 

#1 exhaust fumes can kill  (easy enough to ventilate when necessary or just take the bike outside to run)
#2 the mess on the floor (you got that covered)
#3 The Wife ( as Stephen said "your golden")

BTW - Stephen, That bike still looks great.

I use a garage, but in the south we don't suffer your type of winters.  I suggest you pipe the exhaust to the outside, but I am sure you thought of that.

Bikes used to be parked in our livingroom... until we got new carpet...  I wasn't too happy with it then, but I'd probably do the same now if we didn't have a garage....

 I bring my bikes inside during the summer here in Phoenix. It really sucks having sweat drip into your eyes and the tools slipping out of/burning your hands.

Sure I rebuilt a WMX125 Cagiva In the Livingroom Floor one Time during the Winter.Best thing About it Mom and Dad Didn't know because I would bring it inwhen they left and Have it back ouside on the Porch before they Came Home. They Wondered why it Magicaly went from several Crates to a full bike in nothing Flat.

If you going to bring the bike inside you should watch out for gas fumes but you said you have windows for ventalation so that shouldn't be a problem.

My wife is very forgiving of things I do, I have done alot of work in the house on bikes, cars parts and once I had 5 pc's ripped apart upgrading 4 of them at the same time.  The living room was a mess . 

I need a bigger garage, everytime I want to work on a bike I have to move the other 3 outside so I can have room.

I've had more than one bike in my livingroom...4 actually...3 at one time.  I've actually brought them in and backed them down my hallway to an extra bedroom to do a little tinkering "out of sight".  I had to take my window out to get the bike out because in the time it was in there we got a new safe in the hall that eliminated access.  It's a pain in the ass, though.  I would suggest heating your garage.

How big is your garage?  If it's less than 700sq ft then a very small woodstove would make it super toasty.

Another Heating Option that you wouldn't have to worry about Open Flames around Gas fumes would be a Monitor Heater that uses Kerosene. It's all Vented out side and only Requires a 2 1/2" hole thru the wall and a 3/8" Hole for the Copper line.The down side is that it uses Kerosene but is Efficient Enough to only use 1 gallon every 24 Hours if it Burns Continuously.For Heating a Full house you would need a Large 200+ Gallon Tank but if you are only heating one Room/Garage you can supply the Kerosene from a 5 gallon Can as long as you have it Higher than the Heater itself.
A Friend gave me one a while back that I have to get fixed before I can use it.Hopefully I can get it Hooked up before the Weather turns bad.

^and a benefit to a kerosene heater is that it will burn anything...kerosene, lamp fuel, coal oil, diesel, vegie oil, waste oil, etc.  Waste oil and veggie oil has to be pre-heated, though.

I use a waste-oil heater in my shop and I burn everything from oil motor oil to vegie oil to gasoline in it.  I made the interior large enough that I can even burn wood in it, but it's at the sacrafice of efficiency...just off the oil it's struggling pretty hard to keep the shop toasty.

So how are you going to keep the room heated with the windows open for ventilation?

Besides that, it's your house.  Just be warned that it can stink the place up with the smell of petroleum products.
