If we could have waited till there was a ride, I wouldn't have had to give her one. Her ride's car broke down. Her roommate was too drunk to drive. I chose the lesser of two evils. Drunk guy in a car, or sober guy with no gear.

So...what you're saying here is......that she has only two friends: a drunk and you? ???   ;)

If we went down, and I was in full gear, and she wasn't, and she got hurt... I'd never be able to live with myself. Just my $.02

Ok. I understand what you're trying to say here, and I admire your gallantry, but I'd rather not have to come keek your @$$ because you hurt yourself horribly due to not wearing gear. :P  :kiss3:

It was 10 o'clock at night. Our options were: The store manager (creepy old dude with whom she didn't feel comfortable in a car), Her ex-boyfriend (his car broke down), her roommate (he was drunk, cuz he'd just gotten off of work)... Beyond that, yea, I was more or less her only choice.

And believe me, if I went down, you wouldn't have to keek my ass.. I'd do it myself. We went the backroads, never over 30mph, and it was maybe 2 miles, tops. I took every precaution possible. Beyond that, it's just the risk inherent in living.

Yeah, I understand cabs are pretty scarce in college towns. :P

Besides, we're all going to die anyway, so might as well live it up without gear!  :icon_rolleyes: :laugh:

Shes just an attention seeker.

Yeah, she is an attention whore, but her pics are a great way for *others* to learn how bad it can be, even if she isn't the perfect roadrash role model. ;)

My college town got their first (and to date only) cab 2 years after I graduated.  But I'm not in Atlanta :)

I was in Kennesaw. I did not think of a cab though. Although, I doubt she would have willingly paid for one. Oh well... what's done is done.. and I'm not dead.. yay!

Then I started thinking crazy, convincing myself that wearing gear on a 2 wheeled vehicle should be Federally mandated. Do you know how many lives it would be saved if wearing a helmet and full gear were required by law? Hunderds, maybe thousands.

Just to play Devil's Advocate ... but anyone have an idea how many this would actually be?  I'm curious.

That being said, I always ride with my gear and only put my hand on the tank when my wrist starts to hurt.

Yea I thought about it, this is how it would work. Sorta like SNELL who certifies helmets. A committee would be formed to certify gear then a patch would be placed on all gear that passes the inspection. Then if you get pulled over and you don't have certfified gear on then you're given a ticket. Much like not wearing your seatbelt.

BUT....it would never happen. Plus all those fat harlery riders would form an army and storm congress. But hey it would save a lot of lives.  :dunno_white:

Well thats unusual for this forum  :icon_rolleyes:

The main reason I posted about this was just a reminder that gear is good whether she's an attention whore or what ever is really irrelivant. The fact is don't wear your gear & come off your in for a painful recovery.

As for riders that don't wear the right gear, I guess it's their decision not to & they're the one who'll have to live with the consequences if/when they have an off. Trying to get these riders to wear gear is like trying to teach a pig sing, all your going to do is waste your time & annoy the pig.

That's not true.  I was convinced to wear gear by my peers.  When I started riding I wore nothing protective.

I think, though, that most people go about trying to "convert" others the wrong way...advertising how dangerous it is to not wear the protective stuff, and telling them how stupid they are for it, is posative publicity, unfortunately.

I don't know how to propperly convince others, though.  The deciding moment in my life was being told to think about Kalee as, for some reason, I hadn't.  She would ride pillion with me, just as naked in the eyes of the asphault.  Having been a luger for a while, I became very familiar with what asphault does to flesh on numerous occasions...I've had the skin peeled from my left arm on two occasions, and have badly burned my back and left hip on others.  I'm a man and I dealt with it...in fact I was proud of my "battle scars"...but Kalee is different.  In my eyes she's frail and weak and should be protected from such harm...I couldn't live with myself if, at my expense, she ever endured a fraction of the pain I have.  I couldn't very well make her wear gear if I didn't wear it myself.  From then on I've donned a helmet and jacket and gloves and boots, at least, ever since.

(I don't wear shorts...shorts are for chicks)

Becareful in Kennesaw lived there for over 2 years Cobb co. cops are the worst in Ga.

I feel the same way Mak and NGFL do.  Thats probally the reason why my wife got all of her gear before I got mine  :laugh:.  If I get hurt riding because I wasn't wearing gear then it's my faut, no sense in complaining about it it would totally be my fault.  I would not be able to look myself in the mirror if I let my wife ride without gear and she got hurt.

I wear my gear for two very important reasons, my wife and my son.  My son's only 2 1/2 years old but he has never seen me get on my bike without my gear on.  I do know that people die from riding motorcycles, or can get seriously injured, and that in some cases gear will not help.  But if I can do or wear something that will decrease my chances of being hurt or dead then I'm going to do / wear it.

Enjoy life you only have one, but don't be so careful that life slips by you and at the end you wonder if you really lived or not.

from her myspace i read this im thinkin ehhh

"The motorcycle is my shepherd; I shall not want. It maketh me burnout on black pavements; It leadeth me beside busy freeways; It restoreth my soul; It leads me in the path of quickness for its names sake. Though I walk through the valley of rice, I shall fear no turbo, for Torque art with me; Thy clutch and thy throttle they comfort me. Thou preparest a Track for me in the presense of mine enemies; Thou hast anointed my engine with oil; My bike overpowers. Surely traction and victory shall follow me, All the days of my life, And I shall dwell in the house of the CC's, Forever. Amen"

It's so funny that this came up in this topic. Im meeting with my doctoral advisor next week to discuss the possibility of doing some research into the impacts of wearing gear (not just helmets) but full gear.  He does alot of economic impact of injury stuff in his research, so I"m thinking about creating a survery of riders here on this forum and on some other forums to get some pilot data on the prevalence of who wears gear and also types of accidents people have had.

it really pisses me off when people purpously bastardize the only thing I sa to God before I ride:

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name' sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

~~it's a rather powerful thing to recite prior to a ride.  Even more powerful to believe.

I am not very religious, and usually it pisses me of when christianity (or any religion, for that matter) is worn on ones sleeve, but I fully concur.

Religious feelings of others are not to be trampled on. Period.
