MSF class passed, now looking to buy a bike.

Hey guys,

I completed the MSF class 2 weeks ago, and now I’m trying to find the right bike.
There’s a 2002 for sale, it has ~2500 miles and has been rejetted by the dealership. I’ve looked for a post that says how to check for proper jetting, but didn’t have much luck. Anything I should watch for? And yes, I have $1000 set aside for protective gear.

The only way to check from the outside (w/o tearing the carbs apart) if the bike's been rejetted is to check the brass plugs that cover the air mix screws. There's one on each carb, facing down at rear, I think. Search for air mixture screw to see if you can find anything on this here.

I'd have to say though-unlikely the dealer rejetted. Why would they. My local dealer didnt even know how to rejet for stock set up so unless the dealer installed pod air filters (no airbox) and/or aftermarket exhaust they didnt touch it.

Maybe, just maybe the previous owner did it...Brass plugs give it away.

Good gear-make sure you get a properly fitting full face helmet, leather m/c gloves, m/c boots, jacket (leather preferable) and pants if you can swing it (really necessary IMO, esp if you like to ride twisties...which you invariably will with a little experience.).

I too am biased and think the GS is just a great starter bike and for most of us a keeper, too.  There are a couple of other "honorable mentions"...the Kawasaki Ninja 500, a very good bike, easy to ride and maintain and would suit your purposes...and the Honda Nighthawk 750...a little more oomph in a bland package...but very reliable and a bullet-proof engine.  I'm sure others will have a few more suggestions.  Go for the one in the best shape you can find at an affordable price.  I do hop[e you end up with a GS-500, though.  You won't be sorry.

I called the guy who's selling the bike and he said he had a receipt from the dealership for the rejetting  :? . So maybe some dealerships will do that. Either way, I just want to know how to see if it's been done correctly, from what I’ve heard it’s a PITA if it wasn't done correctly.

Pontablo, I've looked at both your website and the home page many times, and fenderectomy is on top of my list of mods. I understand I don't have to worry about the fork springs and the tire till I get some decent riding experience.

As for the gear, I'm getting a KBC VR-1 from helmetharbor, Teknic jacket and pants for the summer (either thunder or prowler). One thing I like about those jackets is they're not too flashy. Oh, and I saw the post on the closeout prices on them now. I'll probably get JR reveloution jacket and pants for the winter. Maybe some dragging jeans for my commute (just a few slowspeed miles).

I'm in Blacksburg, Virginia 'GO HOKIES!' and we have a lot of twisties down here that I've enjoyed in my miata for the last 2 years, but I've wanted a bike for so long, and I can finally afford an inexpensive bike and a car.

Most of riders I talked to recommended the Ninja 500. I think the Nighthawk has a long wheelbase (don't know really what I'm talking about ), but to be honest, the GS is the sexiest of all three even though it's naked   :) . Plus I get to stay under the 500 cc category, which is great for insurance :thumb: .

Anyways, I think I've talked long enough, but there's one more thing. What's a good price for that bike? It's a 2002, ~2500 miles, K&N filter and jets and maintenance records (according to the seller). Thanks.

'02 model with 2500 miles....about $3200 in very good condition?  I don't know.  I bought my '01 model brand new in June of '02 for $3300 at a local dealer.
