Hi All,

I bought a Kat 600 shock off e-bay and want to mount it on my bike.  According to the Clymer's manual, I have to drop the rear wheel off first.

Is that true?  If not, is there anything I need to watch for as I start unbolting?

Also, should I take the gas tank and air filter off first in order to get to the top of the shock, or should I just angle in from the side with a universal joint and some extenders?

Go in from the top.  There is no need to disassemble the rear end of your GS500.  It's a piece of cake if you follow Srinath's instructions.

It's way cool to do it that way Chilly. 

you dont have to do either of those things,
you can get to the bolt at the top, by pulling off the cap on the left hand side of the frame.
just unbolt the old shock(wheel will drop) lift the old shock up and out the side of the frame,
slide the new one down and in. lift the back wheel.
and bolt in the new shock
its really easy.
2 bolts and thats it, nothing else needs to come off

You were right!  It was just that easy!  Thanks--you saved me a million useless steps!  For everyone who is considering doing this mod, it's worth it.  Man, my bike has a whole different feel!  I don't feel like I'm sitting on a partially inflated beach ball any more.  The hardest parts were a) finding the right shock on e-bay, b) loosening the bolts--a torque wrench helps, and c) removing the old shock through the side of the frame and thus installing the new one (it's a tight fit that requires a little wiggling, but overall--not bad).

I also didn't have to unbolt the wheel.  It was a little harder for me though, since I bought a Kat 750 shock, but still went in without the rear wheel being removed.

Still works like a charm.  Even after the hit & run incident.  I believe that the new shock I bought from you helped minimize the damage and the effects.  I didn't go down afterall.
