I've got a 1989 gs500e.

I didn't see how things looked before I disconnected the throttle cable from the "slip grip" throttle tube.
So, now I can't get the throttle tube and the throttle cable reconnected together.  There are 2 holes on the inside of the tube, but only one will fit and if it does it is way too tight.  Any ideas, I can't figure this thing out!

Have you adjusted the cable sleeve to shortest for starters?

The two holes are there for two-cable throttle systems. The newer GSes have those.

The best way to get the cable back into place without taking taking the other end off the carbs is to rotate the tube until the hole is pointing at the ground.  This should give you enough slack to fit the cable in there.

I had the same thing happen to me last month.  I wasn't really paying attention to how everything came apart.  Consequently, I installed the cable backwards at first (roll on became roll off and vice versa).  After playing with it for a couple of minutes, I figured it out.  The nubbin goes in the slotted hole and the cable rests in the channel running the length of the throttle edge.  (sorry, it's kind of hard to describe without pictures).
